Let's say you have a vehicle that is so old that you get offered practically nothing of value for trade in - what do you do?

1) Post it on TexAgs
2) Blow it up with tannerite
3) Sell for scrap
4) Donate it for a tax write off

Can you donate to an individual for a tax write-off? Assuming not...

I'm pretty much sure the write off can only be for what the charity sold it for.

We bought a 2006 Corolla BEATER for my kid to learn to drive on. It was such a POC and under a grand, but it still ran and the AC worked. I'm talking rust and hail damage, tint was cracking and bubbling, and cloth seats that were in bad shape.

After we learned him up, we turned around and sold it to another family for their kid to learn on as well.

That's what I did with my 2012 Jeep Compass when I left Australia.
I got $500 for it and they hauled it off.

It needed a new gearbox and that was going to cost $13,000 AUD and would take 10 months to arrive from the USA. So, I begrudgingly parted ways with my Compass that I bought new less than 8 years earlier.

The Compass & Liberty were designed by engineers possessed by the devil.

They can throw engine rods for no reason, contract poltergeists in the electrical systems, random sensors will fail way too soon, and don't even get my started on the oil filter location...that was absolutely done on purpose as an FU to humanity.

It gets even better when you consider that the standard lift of them is less than what you need for off-roading in the event that you occasionally have to travel over such terrain for work, and due to the Independent Front Suspension you can't lift them high enough to make them off road capable on rocky terrain without investing allot of time, money, or both.

Lockers? Nah, those got excluded too.

The sky slider on the liberty also notoriously failed in several places (motor, seals etc), and the company who made them went out of business shortly after they were added leaving anyone who had that addition stuck with 1 option, glue the seals shut so water wouldn't leak in, and never open them again.

I snagged a used liberty as a beater work vehicle, and will never in my life purchase a jeep again. They had the same engine as the wrangler around that time also.

1. A large pasture with about a 100' circle plowed to bare dirt

2. Three or four large buckets of tannerite

3. Pay per view livestream setup

4. A precision shot from at least 500 yards away

5. ???

6. Profit

We have a 2014 Jeep GC Overland that what we'd get for it is so low, we are just keeping it as a spare vehicle in case we ever need it or the kids need it when they are in town. It hasn't been the best vehicle ever but it seems it should be worth more than it actually is.

How little value? The pick a part type places will give you parts/scrap value and come haul it off. If it had some value more than that left, they might auction it. Is it running?

I sold my old 400,000 mile suburban for about $650 when the transmission gave out. They came out with a check and hauled it off to the parts yard with a wrecker after I signed over the title.

I think for a trade in there is no value - private party there is plenty of value I think.

Yeah, that truck is worth some cash. Maybe not as much as a trade but it definitely has auction value.

When you donate it they usually auction it off. You can only deduct the cash the charity gets from the auction after the auction fees. You also only get this deduction if you itemize.

They shut down the loophole of donating a car and claiming a huge deduction years ago. Unless you are charity minded anyway you would be better off taking whatever offer you get for it.

If you are feeling benevolent… In the past I had a vehicle that was worth next to nothing but I still felt it had some miles in it, I've got a friend that's an elder in his church and actually a retired Mechanic. He and I spent a of couple hours, making sure it was reasonably solid and good to go with nothing obvious wrong with it. He always knows someone that needs a vehicle may be on hard times, etc. I sold the vehicle to them for a price agreeable to both of us and I accepted payments($75 for 10 mos) with the agreement that if the car broke down, we would both walk away with no hard feelings. He was my intermediary and knew the person that there wouldn't f@#kery, etc.

Somewhat of a gamble but gave me a warm fuzzy with no downside.

That will sell instantly here for someone's weekend/hunting truck, or on craigslist/marketplace for cash to someone who doesn't speak English. I may have a friend who could use it...

What's wrong with it? Only 150K, I'd think there'd still be plenty of meat on the bone.

nothing is super wrong. ABS and brake light came on the dash so getting that checked next week. I had done a couple of "what's my trade worth" deals online and got practically $0 offers. The premise is that to a dealer it might have no trade in value - private party is likely the best place to capture some value. Truck is my daily driver so timing a sell and purchase is a challenge.

Put in on Marketplace for $13,500 and reply to every "what's your bottom cash price?" message with $10K and it'll be gone by the fin de semana.

Back it out of the garage into the driveway on an evening like tonight and let the good lord put it out of its misery via hail. Then insist its worth at least $1,000 until my insurance company gets tired of it and cuts me a check.
