I have a question that I hope y'all can help me out with. We inherited a 1979 CJ5, which I'm pretty sure has the 304 5.0L V8. It has been fixed up and predominantly used as a hunting vehicle. I know the following have been done:

Holly carburetor
Bed liner spray inside and out
Seats replaced
Rumble seat added
New instrument panel and diamond cut dash
New lights (KCs) and switches
Power steering added in 2022

Tires were new in 2017, but I doubt they have more than 25 miles total on them. Look brand new.

I'm looking for information from someone with experience with this type of vehicle to determine FMV for a private sale. If y'all have any insight, I'd appreciate it!

First time poster on this board, so if there are additional details I can provide, please let me know.

Thanks in advance, y'all!

Howdy AggieRain,

Welcome aboard! Jeeps are not my specialty but here are a couple of quick thoughts/links that I hope help.

1) Start with the VIN and decode what you currently have. It should be located on the drivers side firewall, under the hood, near the brake master cylinder. Here's a link...

https://www.extremeterrain.com/vin-jeep-cj-1971-1986-tech-guide.html

2) Originality (mostly) is always preferred. Engine, Transmission, Body, etc. but not always means a skyrocket in value. Obviously a Golden Eagle or Renegade styling trim will command a higher value but this link should help identify what options and color codes it came with.

https://www.jeepforum.com/threads/1974-1980-jeep-cj-trim-codes-listed-here.644008/

3) Current FMV for you to research. Browse around and compare similar CJ's to see what the market looks like currently. Without seeing any pictures, I would set a $15k baseline and then see where you end up after researching factory options, trims.

Best of luck!

Pictures would be helpful as well.

Check tires closely as they may be showing signs of dry rot at that age regardless of tread wear. I wouldn't trust 10 year old tires especially if left outside for much of that time.

Amen, especially with only 25 miles since installed apparently? My 2012 Triumph Mcqueen SE still has the og Metzeler's and they're a lil too cracky on the sidewalls. They still hug the corners until God decides to throw me for a doozy.

AggieRain, are you trying to find a buyer or do you already have one and just trying to figure out a price?

I have a '78 CJ7 with the 304 that I'm looking to sell. I can post information here for the posters above asking, but don't want to steal your thunder if you're going to post yours for sale.

You are definitely not stealing any thunder. I'm just trying to figure out FMV. I get most of my info from TexAgs, so I figured it was a good place to start. I didn't really know how to value a 79' jeep with the mods I posted. We have a couple of people interested, but if anyone on this site considers jeeps passion projects, I'm happy to talk to anyone interested.

Thanks to everyone who has responded with good info. I'll start running these leads down over the weekend and will try to post pics of the jeep here as well. Need to get out to the ranch to grab a few.

Thanks!

Circling back to this thread for those that wanted to see photos. Jeep is pretty fusty from storage, but it is sprayed with rhino liner, so easy clean up. Did some research at the links y'all provided, and this was a renegade trim that was later customized for hunting and ranching. I don't think street legal at the moment, but could get it there.

Very cool! I'm glad you were able to find out more about it. The Renegade trim plus the optional 304 V8 really helps the value plus its a desirable 3 speed that can easily be upgraded to a 4 speed for modern traffic.

I think you priced it perfectly. It is a very fair and realistic asking price. Plus, there is plenty of meat on the bone for the buyer to take it next level. You shouldn't have any problem selling.

Thanks for the update, AggieRain. Best of luck on the sale!

For reference, this pristine example is also priced at $12,500.

I personally think the bedliner is a huge turn off as it would be a PITA to remove. Honestly you're probably double the market for a ranch jeep.

Thanks for rhe feedback! Yeah, I didnt have a good barometer other than some of the auction site's. We sent out to some interested parties. As with all things the market will ultimately set the sales price. Appreciate your perspective!
