Howdy! Had some work done on a 2018 Elantra recently and shop said it was due for a brake fluid change. Claimed it should be done every 30k miles. Another mechanic I know said it is not necessary and is a scam. Have owned cars for 40 years and never had this done. What do the wise ones of the forum say?

Never changed break fluid. Some spills out during pad replacements. Bleed them on occasion during the same time. Check fluid, smell test, does it look like water got in there…nope, top off and keep going. For me, mileage wouldn't trigger this but an actual inspection of the fluid and how it looks.

Do the brakes feel squishy? Does the fluid look really grody? If "no" to both, don't touch it.

Thanks for the help. Brakes are fine and fluid looks ok. That is why I was thinking not necessary.

You can buy test strips online to check fluid condition.

I replace mine when the fluid is discolored or brake feel is poor.

Brake fluid is Hygroscopic. It absorbs moisture.

Regular replacement is not necessary but I do flush when I change brakes.

30k sounds too often, but it should be changed or flushed as it degrades over tine

Suck out the old fluid with a turkey baster, replace with new every 30k.

If the brakes feel squishy, or during normal brake jobs, bleed lines with fresh fluid.

It's not rocket surgery

Sorry. Near useless, feel-good, effort. The fluid remaining in the lines is unaffected by the effort.

If you're going to change brake fluid... change the brake fluid. Gravy.
