Hi- does anyone have any recommendations of repair shops that will work on classic cars? I have an old Cougar that needs some AC work.

Not looking for high end high dollar restoration work. Just a mechanic that know how and is willing to work on a 50 year old car.

Thanks.

Doug would be my first call but he isn't available, any somewhat competent ac technician can address and repair that. Refrigerants have changed, fitting sizes are different, and pressures are different but thermodynamics hasn't changed in 50 years. Rest easy that an established shop should have parts access, references, and tools to repair that without much trouble.

Probably would. Ive only used a mechanic once in the past 5 years and I've seen some really ****ty work. But AC isn't rocket science.....What DOES seem to be rocket science is carburetor work. I always had to do that work myself. The idea of dropping off a car with idle issues or a leaking Quadrajet and hoping some kid with a scanner in his hand can fix it is terrifying. God forbid dual quads or 3x2.

You need a shop with some old guys that have white hair and long beards that look like they spent a lot of time shirtless drinking Lonestar under the shade of a big oak tree pulling a motor with a forklift and an adjustable wrench.

And smoking a non-filter Camel while working on the carb.

Howdy Texasclipper, I've been down a similar path recently in the BCS area.

We've used Olympic Automotive Services for general maintenance and minor repairs (1956 Cadillac, 2010 Suburban). The three brothers that run it are old school for sure. Bear in mind, they stay pretty busy.

I reached out to a couple of other local shops and the nicest by far that I spoke with on the phone was Asher Automotive. They couldnt perform the work I needed, but they guided me in the right direction. My first recommendation is just to call around a couple of places and explain what your Cougar needs and if they can get you a quote on the work or if they know who can.

We got lucky and found an excellent mechanic currently working on a host of things for our 56 Caddy. I'd rather not disclose his personal info on this thread, but if you PM me and provide a couple of details on the Cougar (Year, Engine, etc) I'll reach out to him and see if it's a project he would like to handle or the best alternative that he recommends.

Like I said, getting the 56 Caddy ready for the next 70 years.
Sorry Texasclipper, I'm not trying to distract from your thread.
