What's the best way to get info from them? I sent a message through the website, but not sure how often that gets checked.

Is this Josh? He coached me through a couple things today, then as soon as he dialed it up one notch, everything in my brain was forgotten lol. Had a blast, signed myself and my son up. So I expect I'll meet you soon enough.
This is my new hobby.Apache said:
What is everyone working on right now?
We're still working on truck submissions & entries to take the back from Turtle, half guard & side control.
Also we've been working on escapes from D'arce, Anaconda & Arm triangle chokes.

Muay Thai is tough, its what I started with & think everyone should have some basic idea of it. The cardio is brutal. Enjoy it.Sweep4-2 said:
After barely rolling the past few months (and when I did it went terribly as expected), I'm putting BJJ on the shelf. I've hit my BJJ ceiling and don't enjoy it spiraling downward.
So I'm thinking of trying Muay Thai. But mostly as a way to stay in shape and learn something new (at 53, I realize I'm far too old to spar/compete).
I'll probably be back next week saying that I'm back to BJJ because they saw my striking and said there's no hope for me.
Why put it on a shelf? This is the stage of the game where you go to the gym and don't roll. You walk around offering tips to lower belts using overly complicated terms, Japanese names & scientific terms for body parts.Quote:

Just know.....you're going to get hit in the face.....I'm just sayin'.Sweep4-2 said:
Thanks! We'll see how it goes. I just want to try something new to learn, and also something practical from a self-defense standpoint.
I've taken some striking classes over the years (when injured from BJJ) and they were indeed rough.
Every Muay Thai gym I've been in was equally as respectful as any BJJ gym I've been in. I was 45 when i started and they knew I was the old guy. Communicate with your partner & you can go as hard or as light as you'd like to. Like BJJ, the more mature/experienced the fighter the safer you are.Sweep4-2 said:
Yeah, that's my biggest worry. That and the age of the people at the school.
I'm not looking for cardio kickboxing (or jazzercise with gloves as I call it) but I'm also not looking to get smashed in the face every class by a bunch of fighters in their 20's.
Is it realistic to try to find something in the middle? Bags/pads/light sparring type of focus?
Getting punched m the face might make me appreciate BJJ more haha.
Hey whoa whoa whoa! I am a competetion Blue.....just an old competetion Blue...Gnome Sayin said:
Just avoid the competition blues and spazzy whites and you'll be fine.
You're not wrong.Sweep4-2 said:
I hate to say this…..but once you're past a certain age (generally 25) you can't really be a 'competition blue' b/c the term implies youthful aggression, explosiveness and having no responsibilities in life besides training.
When people ask me my rank, I preface it with "well there's two types of black belts and I'm the much less dangerous version" haha.
Late to the convo but I am also competing for the first time (apart from gym association in house tourneys).AggieChemE09 said:

Welp, lost both my matches. Both about 11-0.
Lost the stand up game both matches.
Had several reversals in both matches, but wasn't able to capitalize on any of them.
Finished the second match with a kimura sweep from Half Guard, and had the guy land in my Triangle during the scramble, then time expired before I could cut the angle and finish it.
Overall it was a step forward though, my defense kept me in the matches, but my stand up and cardio were my weakest points. Some of it may be due to having to fight the scale. I lost 9lbs in a 28 days to make the 168lbs cutoff. Next tournament I should be much closer to the correct weight, so I can spend more time working on the cardio and standup parts of the game.
shout out to BQRyno for making it out to the tournament though! You should compete with me at the next JJWL Houston on July 18th. You always lose your first tournament so don't even think about that being an issue!
