Do they still do the Bike the Bricks in McKinney? I lived on the route and we always had a huge party watching them.

This was probably 10 years ago though.

They do not. City shut it down after businesses complained...

Do you guys ride in any of the DFW area events? Like the Tour De Paris or the hotter'n hell 100? Stuff like that?

I think there may be another trek 100 in Fort Worth this year.

TurboVelo's crits are pretty awesome.

I do more of the MTB events in and around. Going to Bentonville for the stage race next weekend. Will attempt to hit some of the Summer Series, although it's been moved to Big Cedar for this year. I may do Judgement day, where you ride 10 trails in a day.

I think I may race Tmbra endurance series this fall.

We have a a regular group of guys that meet in Dallas, rides to Whiterock, downtown to levies, trinity bottoms, etc on gravel bikes. Usually about 70 miles most Saturday mornings. We usually stop for coffee in Deep Ellum. It a lot of fun. Let me know if anyone is interested.

I want to go to here. I need to compile dream gravel trips to start knocking out - this has made it. Castell doesn't exactly compete with this

Our new house is right on Loop 14 of RCP if you ever head over here.

My recommendations on a lazy Friday morning at work:

Completed:
  • First Sunday of every August Hurricane Ridge in Olympic is bike only. This includes Obstruction Point road (16 miles out-and-back of the best gravel in WA). All to yourself. No cars. (Gravel)
  • North Cascades/Chelan for the Larches: Slate Peak, Hart's Pass, Angels Staircase, Cutthroat Pass (Gravel or MTB)
  • Whiskey Tango: Eastern Sierra + Whitney Portal (Gravel)
  • Oakridge - ATCA / McKenzie Trail, OR (MTB)
  • Mt. Lemon out of Tuscon (Road)
  • Rainier's 4 passes (Road)
Upcoming this year:
Future Bucket List:
  • Moab/Whole Enchilada during the aspens color change (MTB)
  • Telli/Magic Meadows during the aspen color change (MTB)
  • Breck Epic Race (MTB)
Notable: West passes can be really neat during bike only windows every spring before opening to cars.
  • Tioga in Yosemite (personal bucket list), almost caught this year - was open on the way to WTF; closed due to storm on the way home.
  • SR20 in North Cascade (personal bucket list)
  • All of Rainier / But especially Sunrise from Crystal's lot. Catch it when the gate's locked, plowed lane and you can have the visitor center to yourself. (annual pilgrimage)
  • Going to the Sun Rd. in Glacier (never done; by far the most famous)
  • McKenzie/Cascade Lakes in Bend. (annual pilgrimage; daughter does them with me now!)
Obstruction Pt in Olympic:

Larches / Slate / Hart's Pass in N. Cascade:

Rainier:

I rode Tioga Pass back in '04, starting in Mammoth. It's a heck of a climb.

Its all road, but if you ever get a chance to go north of the border, the most beautiful ride I've ever done is from Whistler to Lillooet via Duffy Lake Road.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm still a beginner rider so I was just trying to understand if these are normally attended events. The furthest I have gone is 50 miles. I made a goal to do 100 this year. I took a month off while in Europe and came back and did 40 with little training, so I think it's very doable.

Inside I can do average 20mph for about an hour, but outside over an hour I'm closer to 16mph. Seems like that is mostly due to traffic because when I have open road for 3-5 miles my average speed is closer to 18-19.

That's why I think it would be cool to do an event where it's closed road and I can just focus on pedaling.

Cool pics Ranger.

If JD has RCP this year, I need you to set out some sprinklers and tangerines.

I've ridden nearly all of the major rides around north Texas - Hotter N Hell, Tour d'Italia, Tour de Paris, Waco Wild West, Tour de Cypress. Most are really good. Some of them (Positive Cycology) are an absolute **** show. I'd be happy to post a list of the North Texas rides and give my feedback.

If you really want to do a ride like this, these guys keep a fantastic list:

I want to do the 67 mile Burleson Honey Tour this weekend but not liking the weather.

The best DFW event is Rudolf's Revenge!

I wasn't going to go down, but I was going to head out of my house in Grapevine and do a loop up to Denton. Forecast looked good when I closed my eyes at 10PM! Forecast didn't look so good when I woke up at 2 am to hail and thunder!

Disappointing…

Got my 65 miles in this morning. Though I made two funny noob mistakes.

1. I just got a garmin 540 for an early father's day present. I just figured out how to create a route last night and after a martini, loaded in my route: Grapevine to Denton. Only problem is when I got to Denton it said "Route complete!" and I was like damn, how do I get back? So I found a park bench and created a new route back home. I am sure there is a way to combine my two work outs, but ya I won't make that mistake again!

2. Sitting at a crosswalk to cross a busy street, I clipped out with my left and did the slowest of slow motion falls towards my right. That hasn't happened in about a year, but ya, I had an audience of probably 30-40 cars!

Did you take Long Prairie basically the whole way??

No, once I crossed the lake, it took me to Garden Ridge all the way to the multi use trail off of 35. Which was fine, but not great. Lots of crosswalks so every time you got to speed you would have to slow down to safely cross the road because the corners were mostly blind. Garden Ridge lights were about 4-5 minutes though, so I was glad to get off of that.

Race Report from the OZ Stage Race in Bentonville.

Day 1: Back 40
Lots of rain. 60's
Started fast and was in the top 5 of the lead group (mix of Masters racers). Had a flat about 45 minutes in to the race. Would not plug. Tube did not work (my bad), waited until a friend caught up and passed me a tube. Took me 20 minutes to repair, but got going. Unfortunately, now behind a conga line of slower riders. 15 minutes later, saw another buddy on the side of the trail with a flat. I asked if he was OK, and he said, 'NO!' He couldn't fix his flat, so I fixed it for him and on I went. Middle of the race was great, I was picking people off and feeling really good. Unfortunately, I hit a table top of wet-slick limestone and had a yard sale. Sliced my knee, battered my hands and other tender places. Took the wind out of my sails. Finished the stage, but pretty far back of the leaders and my riding buddy.

Stage 2.
Ended up having to get stitches in knee and my hands were so swollen that I couldn't make a fist or grab the bar. DNS.

Stage 3.
After seeing my buddies race I had FOMO, so decided to start the stage and if I felt crappy, I would bail. Started the race hard with my buddy in tow. He was in 2nd for the overall, so I told him I would race for him. We blew up the group shortly after the start. I buried myself in the road and gravel sections pulling.him through. Felt great, super fun racecourse. No flats or wreck, and we took 2nd and 3rd on the stage and chopped 6 minutes off the leader which was enough for my friend to get the overall win. One of the most fun days on a bike I have had.

Bummed because of the outcome and I think I would have been in the overall with my friend. But had a nice weekend with friends and being in Bentonville racing. This is a recovery week, and I have already created a training plan for big races in October and the end of the year. But I am less motivated right now. Hopefully in a couple of days I will be ready to hit it. Maybe a tab burned out right now.

Did a little mountain biking in Sedona last week. Though, I was lazy and rented an E-bike... I'm going to blame it on too many pool margs from the day before.

Sedona is a sick town by the way... I definitely recommend making a trip out there if you get the chance. Absolutely beautiful.
