I did the Flint Hills 50 this weekend in Manhattan Kansas. There were many hills, as advertised. The race was 2 loops and there was a little more than 2000 feet on each loop. The race was on dirt and gravel roads. it's a very small race. They had one of the biggest turnouts this year with 50 people running the 50 miler. They also have a marathon. Only 2 people DNF'd. It was a fast race, but I believe that's because most of the runners were local and trained on those hills. I, unfortunately, don't have anything like that around where I live in DFW. It's a good little race, though, if you want to get some big rolling hills in.

Three Days at Syllamo

I did the 50k and 20k (so only 2 days). The trails up there are hard. And the cutoffs are too. This is a hard race series for back of the pack runners. They are progressive cutoffs, so you have to run faster in the beginning - you can't just be very consistent. They decided to extend the cutoffs for the 50k to anybody that could get back before dark. They did pull a lot of people though. I got back around 7:30 and probably had the fastest 8 mile stretch I had during the whole race. I didn't want to get to the end and have the guy feel like he shouldn't have let me continue.

This race series has a great community, and people who do this race every year. I'd recommend it, but you need to look at the cutoffs. The second day is a 50 miler, and a lot of people go into that with the mindset that they are going to get pulled. If you want a big challenge, any of the 3 days would be good. It's pretty difficult for a flatlander to train for anything like that.

I really enjoyed Spirit of Syllamo a couple Decembers ago. I agree it seems to be a great community of locals up there and I'm glad to see you weren't too scared of getting back out there after your last "adventure" there.

I told my husband if any chance of storms was in the forecast, I wasn't going. It ended up just being really hot.

I've been trail running for a few years though Tejas Trails and Perspective Pacing. My favorite events are the night time trail races now out on by Perspective Pacing.

I did the a rocky Raccoon half marathon this past February (turned out to be 16 miles).

I am geared up for a half marathon on the beach in Surfside this weekend.

In August I'll do a 30k nighttime time race in Reveille Peak Ranch.

Hopefully, I'll do all this in prep to support a buddy doing the sticky Raccoon 100 miler next February.

I'm training 6 days a week (3 lift days, 3 mixed cardio). I've been playing with various training modalities. My bike trainer is my newest obsession. I also like to ruck and mountain bike.

Similar type of running for me. Got into trail running several years ago, and most of my Texas running is as a Pacer (Rocky Raccoon, Habanero, Dino Valley, Palo Duro, etc). I was supposed to run the Rise Racing Co. Panther City Ultra last weekend, but it was postponed (weather).

But I've also enjoyed expanding my horizons and running outside the area (Silverton CO Alpine Duo, Cody Peak WY, Grand Canyon R2R, Palo Duro Canyon, etc.).

Has anyone ever tried one of those running vacations? My feed on IG/FB is now flooded with them, and some of them look really cool.

I'll run wherever I can.

A few years back, I happened to be in Boulder on Memeorial Day Weekend and ran the Boulder Boulder 10k. Registered at 5 am and ran the race at 7:30 am. It was a lot of fun, and the post-race party was the best I'd ever seen.
