Let's have some light-hearted fun. It's easy to have a very old grandfather…but grandmothers have different limitations. I'm an only 60 years old. My grandmother was born in 1881. Never learned how to read or write, had to sign her name with an "x."

You got me beat and I am older than you. My grandparents were able to sign their names and read, now their parents...

Dad's 1909
Mom's 1897

The oldest would be mom's grandfather1893. Spoiled the hell outta me. Called everyone "Joe," so everybody flipped it on him and called him Joe. To me he was Daddy Joe. My middle name comes from him and that is what I go by.

So did she have your parent late or did your parents have you late.

She was born in 1881.....and was 42 when my dad was born in 1923. And my dad was 42 when I was born in 1965. A couple of other interesting things about her:

- she could recall the indians bringing turtles to her family's cabin and having her mother cook them.
- she insisted on dressing up to watch the Lone Ranger back in the 50's....because she refused to believe folks on television could not also see her.
- her oldest son (my uncle of course) was killed in an army air corps plane crash in San Antonio in 1928.
- her husband (my grandfather) ran off and lived with another woman in another state when my dad was five, but they never did formally divorce and would see each other when both visiting grandkids

Now on the other side of the family....there was an uncle, not a great uncle...that fought in the Spanish American war. But....that involved a 60 year old marrying an 18 year old......don't ask.

I don't think anyone's beating you Harley. Was this thread inspired by the passing of John Tyler's last living grandson?

Harrison Ruffin Tyler died Sunday at 96, according to Annique Dunning, executive director of Sherwood Forest, the Virginia property that members of the Tyler family have called home since the end of its patriarch's presidency. Tyler had suffered strokes in recent years and died of natural causes, she said.

My dad's mom was born in 1901 and died when she was 28 years, 5 months, and 11 days old. My dad was the oldest of her five children at 10 years old, the youngest wasn't even a year old.

I have only seen two pictures of her, only one of my grandfather. If I get to heaven, she is the first person I want to look up. Will pick some flowers, hopefully she likes them. I want to hear her voice, is she quiet and shy, or more outgoing? I want to know how she met my grandfather, what attracted her to him, how were the four trips back and forth from Texas to South Dakota from 1919 to 1922, the final one with a two year old and a one year old.

Wonder if she likes to drink, or dance, her favorite foods, the music she liked. I'll get around to seeing everyone else, in due time, but the first month or two its just gonna be my grandmother and me.

Wow, that had to have been horribly painful!

My grandmothers were born in 1894 and 1895. Rather than being illiterate, both had college degrees, and one even had a master's degree. That was extremely unusual for a woman back then.

Ironically my dad had severe gall bladder issues when he was in his 50's. He let it go and he ended up in the emergency room and the doc said it was so infected it could have burst.
Apparently that can still happen even now.

Grandfather on paternal side 1876. Both my grandfather and father were older for having kids in their generations. Today not viewed as older so much at the ages they had kids.

Just saw title said Grandmother so that be 1889 on father's side.

Might have you beat, I was born in 1955, my father was born in 1906, and his mother was born in San Antonio in 1869. She had five children and my dad was the youngest. He started late in life and had three children. So technically my younger brother has me beat. He was born in 1957.

I also have a cousin in Houston who was born in 1953, he was the last in a long line of children. His grandmother was also born in 1869, she was my grandfather's sister, and her husband, his grandfather was born in 1856.

Class of 91. All of my grandparents were born during/after WWI. My great grands were all born in the late 19th century. My maternal great grandparents fortunately moved/immigrated to TGSOT from the plantations of SW Louisiana right after WWI. My parents are first generation Texans.
