Circa 1989 I took US History from Terry Anderson.

In a lecture, he claimed that the mayor of Bryan won the land grant that established TAMC in what is now CS in a poker game.

Any truth to this?

Yes. IIRC, Dethloff's Centennial History recounts that story.

The story is on a DVD about the History of A&M narrated by Lyle Lovett. Harvey Mitchell and John G. Bell, played one hand of cards. Harvey Mitchell won, and the rest is history.

The video states that John G. Bell is who Bellville was named after, but that part is not true. The town was named after 2 brothers, Thomas and James Bell.
