Here's a good interview with the author Bryan Burrough. I'm adding it to my reading list. I read "Forget the Alamo" which he co-wrote and thought that one was pretty good.

I'm listening to it sporadically right now on Audible. It's very, very interesting. The author is more than a bit condescending to the South and Texans, but the amount of research he's done is incredible, and he presents it in a manner that definitely keeps your attention. He also mispronounces Texas place names, but you get used to that any time you listen to non-Texans.

The author of the book did grow up in Texas, but the narrator for the Audiobook.

I've listened to it as well. I agree that his condescension is a little off putting as well as him basically blaming all old west violence on toxic manhood. He interjects too much modern framework in the book in my opinion.

But the guy wrote forget the alamo, so i guess it's not surprising

The book is a modern revisionist history meant to capitalize on the sentiment of the era in which it is published & is rife with errors, exaggerations, lies and generally poor scholarship.
