Goals/Expectations for Elko in Year 2?

For those that have expectations, what are they for this season? Personally, when I had expectations last season, one of them was to win a road game. I could've cared less if we were playing the sisters of the blind if it meant we win on the road. Goal was to just win a damn road game, snap that losing skid we had with Jimbo, and get that monkey off our back.

As far as this year, a goal I have for Elko is to win a BIG game on the road. You won on the road last year, now go win a road game that is actually significant (ND, corndogs, sips). I don't count Arky or Mizzou as "significant" road games until proven otherwise as of right now.

That's just what I want to see, but then again I'm not getting optimistic or having high expectations until I actually see results for once. Obviously, a SEC championship or Natty is the ultimate goal, but I think we're closer to the same ole 8-4. I'll believe it when I see it. We are a pretender until proven otherwise.

Elko started 7-1 (5-0 SEC) before losing 4 of his last 5 games, including 3 consecutive losses to end the season. Our only win in that span was over New Mexico State. I have noticed several negative trends:

1. We have lost 4 consecutive games to Power 4 opponents, including our last 3 SEC games, since a 38-23 home win over LSU on 10/26/2024. This losing streak will reach 5 games with a loss at Notre Dame, but I expect to snap it with a home win over Auburn on 9/27.

2. We have lost 4 consecutive November SEC games dating back to a 42-30 road loss at LSU on 11/25/2023. I am expecting us to win at 1 or 2 of the 3 November games against Missouri (away, South Carolina (home), and Texas (away) games.

3. We have lost 6 consecutive games to Power 4 opponents in November or later since a 51-10 home win over Mississippi State on 11/11/2023, including our last two bowl games. Our last bowl win was a 41-27 win over North Carolina in the 2021 Orange Bowl on 1/2/2021. I understand that bowl games are crapshoots, but I hope we win our bowl game if we don't make the playoffs.

4. Even worse, we have lost 7 consecutive November road games since a 34-13 road win at Tennessee on 12/19/2020. If we lose both November road games at Missouri and Texas, our November road losing streak will extend to 9 games and into next season.

An 8-4 regular season finish with at least one November SEC win and a subsequent bowl win for a 9-4 finish will be a much better finish than ending last season with 4 consecutive losses to Power 4 opponents. This is my minimum expectation for Elko's 2nd year.

A 9-3 regular season finish would probably require a road win at Missouri on 11/8, which would also be our first road win in November or later since 2020.

I understand that the road games at Arkansas and Missouri are not on the same level as road games at Notre Dame, LSU, and Texas, but I still think winning at Missouri on 11/8 would be great.

1. Missouri has won 10 consecutive home games since a 49-39 home loss to LSU on 10/7/2023, including 8 consecutive Power 4 home games and 7 consecutive SEC home games.

2. We have lost 7 consecutive November road games since a 34-13 road win at Tennessee on 12/19/2020. Winning at Missouri would snap that losing streak and give us our first road win in November or later in 5 years.

9-3 and I am good. Anything more, esctatic. Less, will be disappointed and BAS will kick in.

My first goal is to win the SEC. I am not even looking at the MNC now. SEC is an achievable goal.

Notre Dame on the road that was in the final last year.
LSU most likely night game on the road where we have not won in the SEC.
Texas on the road, preseason pick to win SEC.

He needs to win one of these 3 big road games. And I think he will do just that.

It's kind of insane to set expectations for something you have absolutely no influence over.

On a weird note, I dreamed I was watching A&M play bama in the sec championship. A&M was losing so it felt hyper realistic.

I don't think that the power programs that we aspire towards have had 9-3 expectations…ever.

With money and resources we have, the expectation every single year should be to be playing for conference and national titles.

But we'll be somewhere between 6-6 and 8-4 just like every other season ever.

Goal should be win a national title , realistic or otherwise . Expectation from this fan's perspective…. I have none at this point and I won't even entertain the thought until I see what unfolds vs Notre Dame.

Why would anyone expect a win over Auburn? We have recently lost to some of the worse teams in Auburn history. This includes a game where they had already fired their head coach.

6-2 SEC for trending in the right direction. 5-3 is spinning our wheels.

We play Auburn at home, and we won our last two home games against Auburn by 17+ points each in 2021 and 2023. We have lost to bad Auburn teams on the road in 2022 by 3 points and 2024 by 2 points in 4 overtimes. The home team has won each of the last 4 years of this series. Prior to that, the road team won 8 of the first 9 years of this series from 2012 to 2020, and the only exception was when we blew a 24-14 lead with 5:14 left to lose 28-24 in 2018.

THIS. Must win one of the these three road games.

Win at least two of them and we are talking " special season".

Of course, that means he has to win ALL of the other games - which is no small feat.

Elko was what we could afford and a crapshoot of a hire. But we've tried basically every strategy for hiring over the last 25 years with poor results, so why not?

Pretty much every coach has managed one good year (usually early in their tenure) so getting to 9+ wins would be nice, but won't tell us much about the future. If it's 6 or 7 wins? Then we should probably cut bait and move on.

Yes this should be the standard here every year given the amount of resources the program has. If you get to 10 wins in the expanded playoff era then you will have a chance to make a run for it all. But this year vegas has our win total at 7.5 wins so we'll have to overachieve to get there.

The standard for an acceptable result: 10+ wins.

Start with not getting out-coached.

Players in good physical condition and showing some heart and aggression.

Good fundamentals; Players not missing basic tackles and QB not throwing behind the receiver, etc.

Without these you're just not going to beat a good team and will struggle with mediocre teams.

To be 10 win team we are still behind in the following positions:

-Wide Receiver (improving minimal depth)
- QB (jury still out)
- Interior DL (year away)
- Linebacker (middle of the road)
- Safety (poor tackling and understanding of the game)

This year the following positions are championship level:

-Special teams
-Offensive Line
-Running Back
-Corner
-Defensive Ends (Maybe)
