Looks like we still suck. Reed not hitting in stride on most of those. Receivers allergic to catching anything from O'Neal.

Miles seems to do a good job of leading his receivers with his throws.

Is that our actual quarterbacks throwing to our actual receivers, against no defense? What an abortion

He does. If our OL is expected to be much improved, and we want to stop the opponents from stacking the box, seems like he would be the better choice.

And I'm really going to miss Moose's one-handed grabs. He was highly under-rated.

Give me a break. IF you watched the film and still think the catastrophizing in the comments is warranted, you're either an idiot, can't think for yourself, just plain miserable, or all three. There were 2 bad passes total in a drill.

The comments here are ridiculous. Clearly none of the negative people on here have played the game or even been around it.

You practice to work on timing.

Plus competition brings out the best in receivers (and DB's). We used to run drills like this and kids would have these same kind of drops. Put a defender on them and they were making circus catches. Ball is just different when you have a live defender covering a receiver. It just is. Competition for the ball makes people take their game to the next level. It's always like that.

Yep, looked like a normal practice. And it sure doesn't look as bad as everyone is saying.

A few bad passes coupled with a few drops of decent passes vs. air coverage and no rush....on day 5 of practices. Yes, timing part of it, but it should have been worked on all summer long. I'm glad they still have 15+ practices (I think) before the first game, as plenty to improve.

Frankly, sorta surprised Elko allows these to be released, as the film will not lie, as he likes to say.

If Jerome M. is 80, he's playing this next year a lot...big, smooth route runner and makes a nice catch!

BTW, is that Elko dropping an eff bomb in one of the clips in the background (not sure if related to the passes or something else...or if someone else).

Here's the thing. There were certain routes hit consistently by Reed in the film. And a couple of bad throws on routes in the middle over the shoulder. The routes he hit such as the out routes are more typical type of routes that have success against defenses and not easy throws. Yet, I saw him place 2-3 in a row perfectly. He was hitting certain ones that were most likely practiced over and over bc they will be used more often.

D-1 WRs and QBs should be 100% vs air in a passing drill. The one caveat is, how they throw and catch the ball. Anyone can lob it up there to catch. The differentiator is if they're throwing the type of ball you want them to for that particular route combo. For receivers, it's how they catch it, if they're high pointing it, etc..

This looks to be late into the practice (dark outside).

Their legs are probably gassed at this point in the practice after running multiple repetitions
5 days in - everybody's running legs are sore and throwing arms are tired.

It seems like Coach Klein's focus of this passing drill was more on the
"crossing technique of the route" than on any specific passing accuracy and catching ability.

It is early August people...

If that's how we conduct practice, it's no wonder we are perennially middling. Yes, you practice to work on timing, but against air in passing drills, if it touches your hands, you catch it. I only played through HS, but if our receivers touched a ball and didn't catch it, they ran to the pole and back. Didn't even have to tell them, they just did it automatically. Don't care if it's day 5 and their little feelers are hurt because it's late in practice, they are now paid mercenaries. Catch it or find someone else to pay you.

As for the film, there were some bad throws that both missed on, there were some good throws that receivers just butterfingered, and there were some piss poor efforts by receivers. Personally I thought Reed's throws looked better on the whole, but when he missed he missed bad. Miles' seemed more consistent, and I didn't pay enough attention to who the receivers were, maybe he got the backup receivers to throw to, but his receivers didn't do him any favors turning good and decent passes into catches.

All told, I'm pretty disheartened by that film for all. Day 5, evening when it's finally cooling off at least a little, in shorts and pads against air, passing drills, we should be crisp as hell. We very much were not. I don't watch others teams practice clips, but I can't imagine someone like Saban would have been pleased with that when he was coaching. 8-4 ceiling here we come.

Anybody who doesn't think that is horrible practice film is insane. Reed throws one decent pass the entire time, he never hits a receiver in stride and they have to stop and wait for the ball over and over. His delivery is late on every single pass, the ball has no zip, and his windup looks like a Japanese baseball pitcher. Those are NOT hard throws.

O'Neal is ten times the passer but his receivers simply can't catch the ball. I don't care if they are tired, you think they will be tired in the 4th quarter against Notre Dame? Their cuts aren't sharp and they look like they are half a$$ing everything.

This film is exactly why we suck every year. You play like you practice and this is weak.

In a drill like that the ball should almost NEVER touch the ground, we completed about 50% of the passes against air.
Madmarttigan
8:32a, 8/5/25
Even if you forgive the QB timing because it's a practice, the amount of drops are insane
Emilio Fantastico

While the passing did not look great, the disturbing part is that most of the receivers looked almost disinterested in catching the ball.

I sure hope our running game is strong.
