Agree with this on the surface....go see some stories of UGA (esp. w/ Chuckie visiting and he's very impressed how they are run with precision and toughness) and comes across differently of expectations/precision/etc.

I'm not a Saban fan (think a bit of a facade as always had better talent / depth), but keenly aware of stories when at LSU and Bama regarding that every rep counts expectation/execution just like being in a game (prepare harder in practice so the games seem easier... but I'm not paid to coach the team and everything is under control, right).

Elko growing the program, but time will tell.

Look obviously some of those throws (by both qbs btw) were not great, but on most of the atrocious ones what I saw was bad routed running things like not 'exploding' out of their cuts etc...I know no one wants to hear this, its still really early in camp, let all these guys work on their timing, lets see what they look like in two weeks. Id expect it to be night and day.

If Jerome Myles can be 100% this year, or even for the 2nd half of the year that will be a major boost to the passing game.

it is practice against air so this means nothing.

that said the hope would be that these guys were working together all summer on routes like these so by now all kinks would be worked out or at least most of them.

It means nothing when it's practice against air if they look amazing. Make every catch, crisp routes, etc in that scenario doesn't mean we will have an elite passing game. That should be the standard for passing drills against air, that they make the uncontested catches 97% of the time, and the routes look flawless.

When it's practice against air and the routes look sloppy, passes wobbly, and catches missed, that is concerning.

A slugger hitting bombs into the stand at batting practice every pitch doesn't mean he is going for the home run record this year. But if someone is supposed to be a power hitter but can't get it out of the park in BP, there should be major concern he's going to when the lights are on and pitches are live.

Very small sample. If looking just at that sample, Reed tends to miss under. Miles tends to miss over. Both can be susceptible to interceptions. But again, tiny tiny sample. Some really good throws by both in there. This board continues to be the dumbest and most obnoxious on texags.

We have a lot more data points than just these clips, particularly with Reed

As I've been saying, I wont be surprised if we put O'Neal in when the situation calls for it

Much like Georgia and sip did last season. If the situation called for the other QB, they made a temporary change.

And i dont think thats a big deal. We played numerous OL last season and not just because of injury. IMO making changes with that unit is a much bigger deal than QB

I still think we go 9-3 if that makes you feel any better. Who knows, maybe even better than that. Reeds wheels will help and we can run a route tree that gives the offense a solid 65% completion percentage

My only concern is the 4 or so toughest opponents when we might need a better mid/deep passing game to keep defenses honest. I can see us giving O'Neal some play time under the right circumstances.

I dont think its a big deal, at all

while i agree you can take some things from one individual practice drill on practice number 5 i am just not willing to go into panic mode cause i don't like what i see on a passing drill on practice number 5.

if they caught every ball on practice number 5 on one drill are they going to the natty?

Give me a break. IF you watched the film and still think the catastrophizing in the comments is warranted, you're either an idiot, can't think for yourself, just plain miserable, or all three. There were 2 bad passes total in a drill.
Literally 2 bad passes in the first 2 passes lol.

I mean just count the number of balls on the ground, against air, and then imagine a defense on the other side.

I ain't saying cancel the season but damn, none of that looked good

I fully expect us to live and die with Reed this year. Hopefully it is for the best. I would not be surprised if Brady Hart takes over next year. Before he reclassified, he was a top 100 recruit.

Let's hope this o-line and running game can set us up with some wide open receivers because that was an ugly drill for sure. Might be a good time to practice the RPO.

More like two good passes. 80% of those passes would have been defended or worse. A game day completion requires the receiver to be hit in stride with almost perfect ball placement.

That's hyperbole.

You do realize that the receiver can make adjustments during his route to give him the best chance to catch the ball? He can run faster or slower, jump high or reach low, take a different angle, etc. All of that is to say that the QB doesn't have to make the perfect pass all of the time. It definitely is optimal but not necessary for the pass to be completed.

Agreed its a small sample and maybe meaningless, but to my lieing eyes, Reed looks just like he did last year.

That's my entire point. Take the good things with a grain of salt when it's practice and such. If the offense looks great in spring ball, doesn't mean the offense will be great when the season rolls around, we've seen this particular scenario so many times. BUT, if the offense can't move the ball in spring ball at all, that is much more alarming.

If they caught 100% of the passes thrown and all the passes were on the money, that should just be box checking type stuff that the offense is ready. Not good, or great, or elite, just ready. Heads are in the right place.

Conversely, bad throws and half-assed effort are much more of an issue that needs to be addressed and quickly.

Again, to my baseball analogy. Scout goes to watch a prospect hit. If he's supposed to be a power hitter, when the scout gets there and he's hitting bombs at BP, that's what he expected. That passes the initial smell test (like making the throw and catch in an uncontested passing drill), but still going to have the "we'll see how he does when the bullets are live" vibe. But if that scout goes to see that prospect and he's not even getting the layups out of the park, scout won't stay around long. Thats where that drill falls to me.

We aren't winning games with the passing game. We are winning games with the run game and defense.
