Welsh departs Administration Building on final day as Texas A&M President

On Thursday evening, Chancellor Glenn Hegar announced that Texas A&M President Mark A. Welsh III is resigning from his post effective Sept. 19, at 5 p.m. CT. Around noon on Friday, a crowd gathered in front of the Administration Building as Welsh departed for the final time as President.

On Friday, a crowd of a couple of thousand people gathered outside the steps of the Jack K. Williams Administration Building on the campus of Texas A&M University as Mark A. Welsh III departed as president for the final time.

Students, faculty, staff and supporters descended on the north end of campus to send off Welsh after Chancellor Glenn Hegar announced the president’s resignation yesterday.

In his farewell message to the University earlier today, Welsh wrote:

“When I was first appointed as President of Texas A&M University, I told then Chancellor John Sharp and our Board of Regents that I would serve as well as I possibly could until it was time for someone else to take over. Over the past few days, it’s become clear that now is that time. On many occasions, I've told people that serving as President of this great university for even a minute is an incredible privilege. Doing it for two years has been a remarkable gift.”

The crowd of mostly students was quickly brought to cheers and applause as Welsh and his wife, Betty, made their way from the steps of the Administration Building to their car.

Welsh walked through a crowd of grateful Texas A&M students and supporters, showing appreciation for him and his impact on the University.

People shouted “Thank you,” and “We love you!” as Welsh walked through the crowd, shaking hands with hundreds.

In his final moments as President, Welsh was surrounded mostly by the group he poured the most into: The student body.

“A special thanks to our unbelievable students. You make this university whole. You give it a pulse. You bring it light… And thanks for providing, over and over again, that the 12th Man is an exceptional training program for the Aggie Network.”

As Welsh and his wife exited, a loud rendition of “The Spirit of Aggieland” broke out among the crowd.

So all those people there think it's appropriate to try to brainwash little kids into being trans

This is the part that makes the least sense to me even in our divided climate. The gender ideology materials in her classroom were designed for children ages 4-12. If we cannot reject this nonsense then we are doomed.

Thank you, General Welsh - and Mrs. Welsh - for your service to our country and our university.

Thank you for your service to both our school and the country, General Welsh. This is a big loss for A&M.

Based on the polarizing responses, the Regents will have a difficult climb finding a replacement that most will approve of. It's been a mess for them so far.

My thoughts exactly. We need someone that is not an ideologue, and I think only a highly political puppet would take the job.

How do you decide to reject it without discussing it? I wouldn't let my (elementary school) kid read it. But if you can't discuss it in a university setting, where can you? Isn't that discussion where students can think themselves that "this isn't right?" Or do we just pretend like it doesn't exist?

Edit to add: I'm not looking for a fight. I'm genuinely curious what the answer is.

It's against state law to teach it.

Great day for Aggies everywhere!

When you break the law, try to cover it up and lie when caught then you have no place being employed by Texas A&M.

As much as I liked him...he had to go! We are not EVER going to tolerate the fake news of the left and their woke narrative. DEI is not acceptable and CRT should be banned forever.

Let's find a President who holds the Aggie values we all live by...NO woke DEI garbage!

It wasn't a discussion. The teacher was insisting trans ideology is right and Christianity is wrong.

Please step out of the echo chamber and understand that not everyone is like you.. genetically, spiritually, and lived experience.

You would think the supposed party of freedom and individual rights would be keen to uphold both of those tenants of American society.

Surprising no one... it's a brand of freedom for me, oppression for those that don't look/think like me. It's posters like you that give TexAgs it's reputation as a cesspool of Aggie culture.

You realize the teacher was oppressing the student? And that Welsh threatened the student over this? Who is oppressing who exactly?

You think they were forced out there? Welsh made some mistakes, but he was a very strong proponent of the Corps. We'll be lucky to find that much support in the future. Whatever political hack takes the job next will be afraid to tie his shoes without board permission, certainly nobody will go out on a limb to support the actual students. Judging the President over one action that you disagree with, while completely ignoring the other things that he's done will get us another fired President in 2 years, then another, and another, etc etc on and on. FWIW, I have several buddies who've met him and liked him, my wife has met him and liked him, my daughter who is a current student at A&M has numerous friends who have met him and liked him, and several of my buddies also have children in the Corps who are confused and angry that the former Chief of Staff of the dang Air Force isn't good enough for their school.

If I was President today and I wanted to keep my job for any length of time, I'd worry about pleasing the following constituent bases:

1. Elected Politicians
2. Talking heads in Conservative media
3. The Rudder Association
4. Students with an agenda and a hidden camera

FWIW, and I mentioned this in another thread the other day, Welsh was always on thin ice with the extremely Conservative nature and values of most of our Alumni. That's ok, and it's ok that he's gone, but perhaps we'll do a better job this next time of finding someone who's not one mistake away from being shown the door on his first day?

The internet writ large is just a reflection of what people really think and say when they're not saddled with concerns about others. TexAgs is no different from the rest of it, good and bad.

The Echo Chamber is pretty small, most here had no idea that Welsh was already unpopular with many of our most influential Former Students, and they had no opinion at all on him until they were told to start having an opinion. He was extremely likeable and was thus allowed to keep his job, but he was also quite out of step with most of us. Even me, and I'm very much to the moderate end of the political spectrum. I liked him b/c he was good for the Corps and everyone I know who has met him liked him, but he fumbled this situation very badly and it's unsurprising that it ultimately led to his exit.

Don't judge Republicans by the words of a few loudmouths, most of the really loud ones are afraid of their own shadows without the protection of a VPN to keep them anonymous.

If the nature of our former students is "extremely" conservative, what do you call someone, who is defending a teacher, who is trying to encourage a positive message about transgenderism to future teachers?
