Today I learned there is a 3 second spike rule in college football.

If a spike is attempted with less than 3 seconds on the clock, the game is over

And somehow Texas almost got to get away with breaking it.

Wonder what the reasoning on that is. A spike is a valid football play. You play until nothing but zeros. What game made them change that I wonder?
