Reed is great all the way up to the medium throws. That's plenty to score 40+. The deep balls are just giving up a down and killing drives. Much prefer high percentage 20 yard to a <10% deep ball. With our receivers, those 20 yards will turn into longer plays with the YAC. This is my biggest frustration with Kleinplay to Reed's strengths, there are many.

Keep em, have to keep the defense guessing.
We have the best WR group since Swope, Evans and Kennedy. Keep throwing deep and figure out what's wrong. Reed clearly has the arm so it should be theoretically possible. If we can consistently rip the top off a defense every other aspect of our offense will improve.
If we stop attempting them, the opposing safeties can play closer to the line. I think you vastly underestimate what just the threat of hitting them means for our offense. Our guys are getting open down the field, and that is huge. Eventually we will be hitting them, as Marcel gets more practice with those throws to these guys.
To think that they haven't already been practicing these throws for two years in this system is insanity. What is going to be so different in the next couple weeks? The dude does not throw a good deep ball.

Reed's best passes are on slants or curls where the receivers face him. His accuracy on go routes or others where the receivers aren't showing him their numbers are where he struggles. The deep pass on KC's td was a coverage bust and KC was facing Reed.

So in college football there is a lot of development that Happens to players. For instance at the beginning of the year, Reed wasn't even considered an average passer. I think most people around A&M knew that to be false, but that was the verdict. As OP stated, Reed has greatly improved in short to medium passing, with the long pass being his Achilles heel rn. So answer me this, how much more dangerous would/will we be when he starts connecting the deep ball? We're almost halfway through the regular season and it hasn't happened yet, but what if he hits 2 big ones in back to back games? This is much more of a mental thing than a skill thing. We can work with that.
It's like when we thought the best we could hope for our defense was mediocrity after the ND game. Since then they have only allowed (1) 3rd down conversion. Point is, let's continue to develop our players because sometimes the light comes on and things can change in a hurry. Or maybe Reed is actually able to pull this off in practice so Klein is trying to get him to do this in the actual games too. In which case, keep em coming.
While I agree to keep attempting them so the opposing teams D has to honor it...I disagree that Reed will eventually "learn" all of sudden how to hit the open long passes., hope I am wrong, but as the great, late Mike Leach once said, you can't teach QB accuracy...

He shouldn't stop throwing the deep ball altogether because it keeps the defense honest, but he should take the check down more often rather than force a deep shot that is not there. That's something the coaches can work on.
1. Abandoning the deep ball is a terrible idea. The worst...

We are going to start hitting them and it's going to be incredible. If we can go over the top for a 60 yard bomb and we can ground and pound, watch out.

A WR beating his man like a drum doesn't really qualify as a "bust" in my opinion. Good route, good ball, good TD. Let's not discount a good throw just because.

Completely agree. I assume he will hit a deep one eventually, even if it's just a fluke. So keep trying them to keep the defense honest. But he forces a lot of the throws that don't need to be made when a check down receiver or RB is available.
He'll hit a deep one against Samford, maybe even two.
Penalties are the real issue.

Miles has attempted 1 deep throw and it was a perfectly thrown 72 yard TD to Craver.
I'm not saying Miles > Reed, but it's possible Reed just can't throw (accurately) deep.

Agree. Reed has a laser deep ball, reminds me of Mike Vick. It looks like a howitzer.

It's experience. Been saying this since last year. You can tell watching Marcel's mechanics that he speeds things up heavily because in his mind he's got a touchdown and he's trying to get the ball out. He's a sophomore playing in the premier conference in NCAA football, he's got a lot of growing up to do in terms of the game slowing down for him still. At some point this year (starting a full year) this is going to click for him and we're going to torch somebody

This. A little bit softer throw maybe as they mostly seem to be overthrows.
According to Copilot, a college qb has a 15-20% chance of completing a pass covering 40+ air yards. NFL drops to 10-15%.

Again the issue isn't so much Reed as the WRs being "influenced" by coverage, notice I didn't say interfered with. When the ball is in the air and you have a defender tugging and leaning on you to get back in phase it affects your top end speed. Reed isn't throwing way past receivers like Mond did. I'm sure when they are running routes on air during practice he is hitting those deep balls in stride. The only way to really practice the amount to take off is to have the recievers and DBs practice 1v1 good on good deep ball drills during practice which I'm sure is happening less during the season than during a bye week or off season.

Mostly this, however, the safety becomes more of an issue as you add more air. He should also consider intentionally under-throwing it a bit with the talent of our receivers. He got a bit snakebit by the ND corner making an incredible play and KC dropping that one that was way too underthrown though. Out of all the things for a QB to need work on, I would say the deep ball accuracy is one of the more correctable. I don't consider it an accuracy issue, rather a timing, 'air', and placement choice (inside, outside, underthrow, etc).

Yeah, I thought his deep throw that he missed where the receiver got blocked going in for it was actually a pretty decent throw assuming he thought the receiver had a full step on the guy instead of a half-step and would get blocked out. It's possible it was just an inaccurate ball he threw and it came in more than he wanted, but the safety was a pretty good ways away still and if the receiver can slant in cleanly, it makes it a much easier throw to go in like that, and it looked like it would have been in stride.
