This week’s edition of Brauny’s Best will be a bit different because, as most of you know, I substituted the Friday Night Lights of Texas high school football for 12 innings of exhibition baseball. The final category will therefore reflect what my eyes believed to be the best thing they saw at Blue Bell Park against Sam Houston.
Texas A&M’s Class
Columbus (GA) Carver EDGE Tristian Givens
- 10 tackles (7 solo), 3 TFLs, 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 1 interception, 1 fumble recovery
No highlights could be found
Talk about filling up the stat sheet. Those numbers check every box for any defender, much less an EDGE rusher. It’s important to remember that Givens started this full-time defensive journey a little bit later than most of his highly-touted peers at the position. Given his already intriguing frame and skillset, it’s pretty easy to comprehend why people often talk about this kid’s ceiling being a Sunday player. A night like he had last week will only serve to build his confidence and inch him closer toward that super high upside.
State of Texas
2028 La Porte RB Sean Simon
- 27 carries, 380 yards, 5 touchdowns
Folks, let me introduce you to one of the best-looking young running back prospects in the Lone Star State. Simon emerged onto the scene last season when he became one of the featured ball carriers for a La Porte team that went deep into the 5A Division I playoffs. A sturdy kid that shows great contact balance and power, Simon’s output last week vs. Kingwood Park set a school record for most yards in a game. He’s already on the radar of Trooper Taylor and the Aggies, having visited Texas A&M a couple of weeks ago.

There had been growing buzz surrounding Texas A&M’s group of incoming freshmen since they arrived on campus late last summer. Sure, they lost a few of their expected immediate impact players to the draft, but the baseball world I live in remained bullish on the prospects remaining in College Station. If Friday night was any indication, Michael Earley and his staff are going to have some tough decisions to make with the lineup card. The four fish in the lineup combined for the following stat output:
- 12 RBI
- 10 runs scored
- 8 hits (2 each)
- 3 walks
- 3 stolen bases
- 2 home runs
The competition ramps up this week with TCU coming to town in the last fall exhibition, but you have to be encouraged by the start of the youngsters.
