Heard this on one of the podcasts and found it interesting.

Nick Saban at Alabama year 1 and first 8 games...
7 wins year 1
8 wins year 2 - ended the year with 2 losses 12-2

Urban Meyer at florida
9 wins year 1
7 wins year 2 - ended the year with 1 loss 13-1

Mike Elko
8 wins year 1
8 wins year 2

Their argument was he is on the same track as some of the best coaches. Does that mean he will be, I hope so. Just interesting.

It's way too early for any of these kinds of stats to mean anything.

Except that they are all at the same sample size. Only undefined for Elko is the remainder of the year.

It's a cool thing to see

Exactly. The most important part of that statistic (the remainder of the year) is unknown. So it's too early for it to mean anything. Do you think that statistic will be relevant if we lose our last 3 conference games?

Good teams with good coaches have great seasons.

I think we have both.

Yes and no. You can't look at these stats and conclude Elko going to win a natty, but you can recognize this trajectory is consistent with coaches who have.

If you look back at national title winning coaches since ~2000; the overwhelming majority showed an immediate upward trajectory and won their title in the first 3-4 years. If memory serves, the exceptions were Mack Brown and Dabo who won in year 6-7 or so. Stoops, Saban, Fisher, Urban and more all won pretty quickly.

The landscape has changed so previous timelines might not be a good measuring stick, but without questions coaches who have won a title showed an upward trajectory very quickly.

great coaches see results by year two. they all by and large are trending up in that second and third year. throw bob stoops and even mack brown in that group. they all win about 7-8 game their first year but by year two and three they were competing and in many cases winning it all.

I hope he's so good that by the end of his tenure we are just Texas AM because we had to sell the & to pay for a half dozen championship coach.

after 22 games:

Sumlin --> 18-4

Jimbo ---> 15-7

Elko -----> 17-5

wins over South Carolina and Sanford will tie Sumlin's record
