Staying put. Again.
As expected, Texas A&M (11-0, 7-0) remained at No. 3 in the Week 14 edition of the Associated Press poll. This marks the sixth consecutive week that the Aggies have held the third position.
Additionally, Mike Elko & Co. are No. 3 in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll.
When it comes to first-place votes, A&M received one from the AP and two from the coaches.
This marks the 11th straight week A&M has been in the AP’s top 10 and the eighth consecutive among the top five. The only A&M teams with similar streaks are the 1939, 1940, 1957, 1975 and 1992 squads.
With no movement in these polls, the same can be expected from the College Football Playoff committee’s update on Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT.
Saturday provided a final tune-up for Elko’s Aggies as their regular-season finale comes in hostile territory against archrival Texas, which is now ranked No. 16 by the AP. Should A&M prevail in Austin on Black Friday, a berth in the SEC Championship would follow. Either way, a spot in the 12-team CFP is all but assured by virtue of improving to 11-0.
“I think the beauty of the next one for us is it kind of hammers itself home,” Elko said on Saturday. “I think that's the nice thing about having that rivalry at the end of the season. I'm not sure that there's anything for Texas A&M football to look past another than that game Friday night.
“We know what that game means. We know what it's all about. We know we didn't get it done last year. We know how important it is for us to go out there and play our best football Friday night.”
Most recently, the Aggies blanked Samford 48-0 at Kyle Field on a day in which 36 members of A&M’s senior class were honored. The victory secured a perfect record at home in the regular season for the first time since 2020 and the program’s first 7-0 home record in history.
“Thank you for the season that we had here from the 12th Man,” Elko said. “I think some things that stood out: 106,000 average home attendance. That's the largest in the history of Kyle Field.
“We talk about it all the time, but it can't ever go unspoken how important the 12th Man is to us and how much their support means to this program. To everyone that was part of that this year, thank you.”
During this Thanksgiving week, plenty of Aggies will be giving thanks for what Elko has given them this fall.
With the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown set for Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT, a win in Austin would be the extra slice of pie following this feast of a football season.
