It remains one of just two retired numbers in franchise history, joining Steve Largent's 80, which speaks as much to the team's lousiness as to the fans' loyalty.

#80 retired? right....

Edit: I'm glad the organization is loyal to Steve Largent

There's really no need for this to get ugly, Aggie folks. Just back down your lawyers, let us keep the 12th man designation and we won't send Allen down to College Station to buy out your little land-grant university and turn it into the southern branch of his Experience Music Project.

The writer has obviously engaged in too much acid over the course of his life.

I said it the other day, but A&M is worth billions more than their stupid owner. It's probably worth more than their entire ****ty state...

The reason no one has really care about Seattles use of "the 12th man" is becuase no one else in the country knew about it. Seattle, and only Seattle knew about it, but now people have noticed and since we OWN the trademark it is ours to use and defend. This has to be one of the most ignorant articles I have ever read, but its ok because I am guessing not too many people will be reading it. Coming from that thriving metropolis of Longview, Washington (population 34,600 as of 2000). Here at the "little land grant university", as you like to put it, our student section alone is larger than the population of your entire city, with approx 40,000 students. So it doesnt bother me too much that Greg Johns of tiny, little Longview has an ignorant opinion. OHHHH and by the way, I really liked your little paragraph on there being only TWO retired jerseys in Seattle. One for number 12 and the other for Steve Largent's number 80. I think i remember not too long ago, someone name Jerry Rice came to your team for a season and what did Seattle do with their beloved Steve Largent's retired number 80 jersy? Well, instead of keeping it retired like most people would, you allowed Jerry to wear the number while he was on your team. Man, those Seahawks sure care a lot about their retired jerseys. Greg Johns, your article is a joke, please put a little more thought and effort into your writing before you just throw some insults down on paper. I could go on and on about this, but I think I made my opinion quite clear.

Thats what i sent ol Greg in response.

Well I WAS going to pull for the Seahawks because they'd never been to a Super Bowl. I'm not so sure I want to do that now.

Hmm...well WE'VE had the 12th Man tradition since 1922. I'd say that's more than enough reason to give us the rights.

Seattle can moan all they want about how they started it in 1984. It's funny that they're like: "A&M hasn't said anything about it until now." Well that's because nobody's noticed ANYTHING about the Seahawks until NOW. I had no idea that they did the whole 12th Man thing.

Here's my two cents:

Go ahead and keep using "12th Man"... and we'll be taking Seattle's money. Thanks for the cash! We'll throw it in with the rest of our billions. Hell Texas could buy and sell the whole state of Washington on a daily basis with just half of our oil revenue... and as far as being a 'little' land grant college: Texas A&M is the third largest school in the country.

So Seattle was using some form of "12th Man" in 1984? Texas A&M's 12th Man tradition started in 1922. I know you journalism majors suck at math and don't know anything about sports, but trust me: 1922 came before 1984.

Tell Allen to get his checkbook out. Our lawyers are going to turn him upside down and shake him hard, just like the Steelers will in the Superbowl.

wow,

qoute:
I have always admired your tradition, with students standing throughout each game and different football coaches using regular students to fill the "12th man" role on kickoff teams over the years. Though I do find it peculiar that you even refer to your basketball fans as "The 12th Man," which either speaks to the depth of your hoop team or the death of your math program.

My main complaint is that it's just crappy journalism. The first person should never come into it, let alone when you're referring to yourself and a team you cover.

While it makes you laugh (and it would initially for me too, probably), there's nothing saying that he couldn't be objective until he said something to prove it. While there are some a**holes over on Raiderpower that denigrate the Aggies on their Rivalries board at any opportunity, there are some good folks on their Texas Tech Football board that don't mind friendly discussions on football with rational and courteous Aggies.

Lance Lopes, the Seahawks' vice president of corporate partnerships/legal affairs, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram he would not comment on whether the team would meet A&M's request.

"I will say this," Lopes told the newspaper. "Our fans have been the folks that have run with the 12th man. It has not been the organization itself. We raise a flag with a 12 on it, it doesn't say 12th man or anything like that. We retired the jersey No. 12 many, many years ago, and we've always sort of kept it under that context.

"But, in terms of this whole 12th man derivative, if you will, that's occurred in the mass media and the public here locally. It has not been generated by the organization, per se."

Over the course of time I've read, and posted on TEXAGS.com there heve been several controversies discussed, debated, *****ed about, etc. Now, jackasses in the NW are derogating our trademark. When, Ags, are we going to form our hit team to stress our seriousness to the rest of the world?

Please don't.

They are going to print all of the most ridiculous letters. And many posted here are ridiculous. Sending a letter will not accomplish anything.

Send a reasonable letter to Bill Byrne, etc.

Weather report from Seattle right now: Cold, rainy and windy...go figure

Bunch of no good, subaru drivin, eco terrorizin, wire rim glass wearin, hybrid drivin, tofu eatin, partner kissin, tree huggin, fish lovin, bird watchin, corporate hatin, oil hatin, sun break worshippin, latte sippin, in debt cause their options are worthless bunch of b@stards. Put Byrne at the spearhead of this issue and make sure he presses it home. I think you all are finally seeing what it is like here on the left coast. They do not respect traditions, law etc and will be flying this in our faces for a while.
