Nice of Mitch to remember he has Harper with ten seconds left in OT. Just enough time to hit a three that doesn't matter.

Castle fouled out.

Still hate not attacking Murray in OT. He's gonna foul or get out of the way. Clear the lane and go at him.

Agreed. And yeah was a little tongue in cheek. We were up 7 when Fox came in for Harper with like five minutes left.

Loss cost Spurs HHHHHHHHUGE.

Now they're gonna face Denver in the playoffs and OKC gets the easy ride thru Lakerville.
Reading this forum sometimes is like people that can't speak English well trying to differentiate between a "booty call" and a "butt dial".

Without Luka or Reeves, Lakers weren't holding off Denver anyway.

They would have been two back with four to play and two of those vs okc and SA.

0-16 from 3 from Fox, Keldon, Castle. We let Braun be their release (he's 29.9% on the season after this game) and he hit us for 5-11.

That and the Fox 4-point foul, the missed bunny, overdribbling and airballing the three, etc all cost us. Plus the Wemby/Julian play where they gave up the easy dunk was inexcusable. A bunch of unforced errors on our part and it was still a 1-possession game.

A lot to go over and fix. Most of it is easily fixable.

I watched back over the last 3 minutes of regulation and OT because I wanted to analyze our offensive possessions vs. what Denver did.

What became apparent was that Denver had a very systematic approach in those last few possessions to isolating the action to Jamal and Nikola. On the play to tie the game, they switched it up and ran a quick action with Gordon instead and Wemby overhelped big time leaving the basket open. On possessions where we defended their initial actions well, they got the ball back to Jokic and he was able to at least get a shot up. The biggest one being the turnaround over Wemby. The big thing I noticed was that Jokic has a fallback option guaranteed to get a shot up even if a possession falls apart. He's practiced that shot and done it a million times and it's at least a decent option to go to if initial plays don't get a better look.

I think mostly what impressed me was that Denver got the shot they wanted on each possession except for the one where Fox stole the ball.

Our offense by contrast got really tight during this period. Fox ended up heaving 2 air balls off of grenade passes and when we went to Wemby at the end of the shot clock we could see that he still doesn't really have a go to move figured out. He tries the dribble to the side into a fadeaway, but he can't always get that off. I think he needs to think about what his signature move is going to be and then just rep it until it's second nature. We had some guys not shoot at all, and we didn't sub during this period either negating our advantage with depth against Denver. I think in total during that 8 minute span we only got the shot we really wanted like twice and everything else was very contested from the perimeter.

Good experience for the guys and hopefully Mitch is watching this same tape and stressing how we need to work on these kind of situations to make sure we do have a plan in place for what plays work when we absolutely have to have a bucket.

The only time I"ve seen this team struggle this season is when they get into a mode where Wemby seems like he's looking to make every play. When they run through the guards and Wemby is a screener and finisher it works great at all times.

Agree completely. Wemby needs to create some but we are typically better off where he is the secondary option posing as the primary. Drive and kick. Put pressure on their defense until it collapses and find Julian, Devin, etc for the open look. Wemby is going to get his and breaking down the defenses is going to lead to a lot of easy rim runs for him.

I have never understood the iso ball nonsense that is the end of game sequence in the NBA these days.

20 seconds left, instead of running the offense and letting the offensive flow dictate a quality shot we hand the ball to best player who holds it for 15 seconds, dribbles a few times and takes a contested fade away 3 that they clank or air ball more times than not. It's like it's an NBA badge of honor to see who can make the highest percentage of terrible contested shots with the game on the line.

How about attacking the basket , run a couple pick and rolls, pass the ball around, make the defense defend for 20 seconds and live or die with a quality shot.

As stated above, Spurs offense is great when moving the ball, attacking the basket and making teams defend. When we play iso ball, we are letting the other team off the hook. We have so many weapons, we should at least work for a favorable matchup.

Yeah, ISO ball makes you easier to defend.

OKC's offensive rating is 119 points per 100 possessions.

SGA and Luka are two of the best ISO ball players in the league at 117 points per 100.

Even if you have the actual best offensive players of the year, your offense is better the rest of the game than in ISO.

Fox is 78th percentile at 101 points per 100.

Wemby is 48th percentile at 87.

You need both the regular offense and the iso offense to be really dominant. The hold the ball for 20 seconds and then try to shoot a fadeaway is obviously nonsense, but you want to run your action to generate a good look, if that fails and now you have 5 or 6 on the shot clock, someone has to be able to make a play at that point. We looked confused in those situations and kept turning it over and chucking hopeless shots.

Jokic was able to take 3 dribbles and shoot a fadeaway over Wemby's challenge. This is a shot he uses repeatedly in similar situations. It's obviously not ideal offense but he's got it ready to go when the initial action doesn't work and you need to get a shot up on the rim.

Wemby's current repertoire of moves in that situation makes no sense to me. He's 7'4" and yet his current signature move is an off balance fadeaway after taking 2-3 dribbles towards the sideline. He hit it vs. Phoenix for the win, but he hasn't hit that exact shot very often this year. This is where your analytics team needs to go through his shot chart for the entire year and tell him what his best % iso spot and finish has been and tell him that's your finisher move. My guess is that it's at the elbow catching and then attacking strong towards the hoop with one dribble and then elevating.

I don't think it was a cheap shot. Looked like both going for the ball.

It's being reported as a rib contusion. Painful but not serious.
Only needs one more game to be eligible.

Ringer has us taking JQuantance and my guy Morez Johnson dropping to 29. Swain not even on the board.

Me and you obviously don't have the ear of the GM, but after what I've seen of Morez, he's at the top of my draft board for what he would bring that matches with what we already have. It's also not hard to imagine him being like Naz Reid and Bobby Portis and becoming a dead eye three point shooter once he gets to the pros and is able to fully dedicate himself to a role as a 3&D big.

Give me energy, defense and positional size any day.

The more I watch this team the more I value a huge motor in a player. Morez has that. Dailyn Swain has that. They may not have all the skills I want, but you can't teach DeAndre Ayton to be relentless. You can teach Kawhi (or Castle or Harper) how to shoot.

We never could teach Sochan to shoot…

Johnson made a nice jump from 0 3s as a fish to 34% this year (low volume, less than 1 a game). He also jumped from 62% to 78% at the free throw line. I haven't watched enough of him to see if his shot looks wonky or anything, but that improvement does suggest he has more room to grow as a shooter.
