Bigger choke: '93 Oilers or '26 Spurs?

I originally thought last night's choke was worse. However, now that I've had a night to sleep on it, it is probably closer than I thought. Both teams had to actively work to let the other team back into it. Both teams had their stars completely shut down in the 2nd halves. I might still give the Spurs the slight edge, but that could just be the bias of it being more recent.

The one big advantage the Spurs fan base has is the knowledge that there's almost no way they don't win at least one or two championships with Wemby in the middle. With the Oilers we already know that was the beginning of the end for them.

I don't think 1 or 2 championships is a given

We'll have to see about that

Anyway

Spurs (Knicks)
Oilers (Bills)
Aggies (Bruins)

In no particular order. Impossible to quantify. They all were colossal choke jobs

One game elimination series impact is far different than a single game in a 7 game series.

Oilers and it's not close.

Oilers also lost to a backup QB and missed out on playing their first Super Bowl against Dallas of all teams. Obviously winning the next 2 games to get there wasn't a given, but think about what could have happened differently with a SB run. This is partly why Clutch City was such a big deal for Houston.

These losses aren't even close.

This was a wild card game, on the road. If they had won, they would have had to play at Pittsburgh the next week, which swept them in the regular season and was the #1 seed. And if they won that, would have then had to win at Miami, which was the #2 seed. The Oilers were nowhere near getting to the Super Bowl.

The Spurs were up 20 points with 9:30 to play in the game, in the Finals, and with a regular-season record 9 games better than their opponent . They would have been better off just taking a 24-second violation every time they had the ball than the strategy they employed.

And if the Knicks win, they should seriously consider voting playoff shares to DeAaron Fox and Mitch Johnson, because those 2 idiots are as responsible for NY being up 3-1 as much as anyone.

I wouldn't include our UCLA game only because college teams blow huge leads all the time...but it was painful to us.

I agree that the Oilers was more painful because the season was done, but that's different IMO than which one is the bigger choke job.

Oilers (and Aggies vs UCLA) were bigger choke jobs. More ways to run out the clock in football. In basketball you can slow the game down a bit, but you still have to run an offense and keep scoring.

A 35-40 point blown lead in basketball would be more equivalent to the Oilers choke.

There is no sports team I have loved more than the Houston Oilers. When they blew that lead, I was physically ill.

That is the biggest choke job still in NFL playoffs history, and is just a point behind the largest blown leads in all NFL history of 33 points.

The Spurs 29 point lead is a massive choke, but not the worst in NBA playoffs, and certainly not in regular season.

Now if the Spurs organization falls apart from this, it might end up bigger.

Falcons/Pats in the super bowl
Atlanta has not even sniffed success after that meltdown.

I was there on the sidelines and the worst part is that someone calculated that we could have just started kneeling it out when we were up by 34 and take three knees and punt each possession starting in the 3rd Q and we would have won that game. That sucked so bad.

You Rockets fans sure talk a lot of trash for a team that hasn't done anything in the past 30 years.

I'm totally content with the Rockets' two titles in 94 and 95 being all I'm getting in this life from the NBA. Best years of my life.

Watching the Spurs fans go from incredible overconfidence to miserable conspiracy theorists the last 2 weeks has been just glorious for me. Wait a minute, I think Brunson just hit another three-pointer.
