I thought Tucker started hotter than that? Was he that good/have that many HR's in the last week of March?

Kyle Tucker.

Ding ding ding.

That's a swoon we have seen before. He needs good Back end of August and good September if he keeps this trend up he will leave a ton of money on the table.

Not as stupid as the lack of progress towards a solution. Or information regarding a solution. Or information in general.

We are going to find out in November that he's having surgery and will be out next season until May.

wait till we see the end of this whole "Paredes is going to rehab the injury instead of having surgery" story

spoiler : he will have surgery in like March

Yeah now that we have Correa at 3rd I'm more okay with him getting surgery now.

That is funny, I was thinking the opposite. With Correa, it's not the end of the world if he's not ready to start 2025 because we have the corners locked down with Correa and Walker. But the benefit of getting another big bat for October outweighs 1st half Paredes in 2026.

If he hits like he did pre-injury then I'd say get him back for October. My fear is he re-aggravates it and makes it worse or doesn't end up being healthy enough in time so it delays the surgery

Was that the Astros' first series win over the NYY since the '22 ALCS? Sure seems like it. Nice job bouncing back after the Boston series. Really need the bats to keep stepping up this week and take some pressure off the pitching staff.

Re: Yordan's potential return i assume the likely move is to bring him back at the last minute like Tucker last year and hope he can play thru some discomfort. Thank goodness Jim was willing to step up and spend some money at the deadline to bring CC back.

You guys act shocked that some MLB players "play the game" of not wanting to work like other folks do.

I'm not shocked but I want to call it what it is. Paredes wants to be on the field. Our other missing big bat, it seems not.

Astro? My first thought is Cam, but that feels like too many HRs.

...

Oh

Its TED isn't it?

Cam
Mar/Apr - 92 wRC+
May - 126
June - 137
July - 59
Aug - 10

A slightly slower start, but a similar-shaped graph.

This is the same data set for Cam. He's his his wall bigly. I wish they would platoon him a bit with Sanchez L/R.

Speaking of Ted, absent on this list and all four potentially could add to their totals this postseason. We still need to make the playoffs and George needs to get healthy but pretty amazing list.

Any update on Jake? It's been radio silence on him from the front office and media guys on a timetable

(And no, running on flat ground isn't a true update given this medical staff)

I wonder how much the World Baseball Classic is factoring into Isaac's decision to avoid surgery.

I thought his "Do I have to answer that" question during an interview said a lot. I don't think he wants info out there about him and wonder if he is asking the club not to release anything or discuss it under HIPAA?

Is it a see him next season thing? Or do you think he'll be back in September? Seems like a return is a long way off given it's a lower leg injury

It's still wild to me that we won the 2022 World Series without Altuve having a single homerun that postseason.

I think if we make it to the ALCS this year, he will probably tie the record

Yordan is also absent. This has more to do with opportunities. Altuve, Springer, Bregman, and Correa started their postseason career in 2015 and 2017.

----

Altuve also ranks pretty high on non HR lists too.
  • Runs: 2nd to Jeter (89 vs 111)
  • Hits: 3rd (10 behind Bernie, 82 behind Jeter)
  • RBI: 7th (5 behind Jeter & Ortiz, 7 behind Correa & Justice, 22 behind Manny, 24 behind Bernie)
  • Doubles: 6th
  • Win Probability: 14th (Yordan 9th, Correa 2nd)

Also, Yordan missed the 2020 postseason. Have to believe he would've had quite a few home runs in that A's series when everybody was hitting them out

(Not a troll, I promise, just my honest opinion)

Having watched Correa in person for ~60 games over the past 3 years, I am not sure that this is a great deal for the Astros. The guy who left 4 years ago is not the guy who is coming back.

Unconfirmed report is that the Twins cheapskate owners agreed to pay $50 million of Correa's salary. If you value 1.0 WAR at roughly $8 million, Correa needs to produce slightly over 6.0 WAR over the next 3+ years to make this a break even deal on value for salary. I think that is a plus/minus proposition: he is at 0.1 bWAR for the year.

Moving to third will help his defensive rating stats some.

He's at .7 bWAR through 9 games with the Astros, so looking good on that front.

fWAR has him at 0.8. I think getting to 9 WAR across 3 seasons is very reasonable.

If he can achieve that, he'll be in the mid-50s career bWAR at the end of his prime. A few more decent years before he hangs em up, and he could sniff 60 career WAR. The average HOF SS has a career WAR of 67.7. Its unlikely, but the door isn't closed on a HOF career, especially if he continues to show out in October.

Been pondering this for a bit. Let's assume Jake, Yordan and Parades all come back healthy and ready to go in 2026. Who plays where? Someone will be the odd man out.

C - Diaz
1B - Walker
2B - Parades??
SS - JP
3B - CC
LF -Altuve
CF - Jake
RF - Sanchez/Cam platoon??
DH - Yordan

Parades at 2B seems to be the biggest stretch. Not sure he has the range for the position.

Thoughts?

Think we can teach Altuve to catch? It would be the reverse Biggio

Make me want to see Correa at catcher just to see him throw down to second on steals.

I'd put Jose back at 2B and make Yordan play left unless Paredes can. An infield of Correa, Pena and Walker should be enough to mask Altuve. Plus Diaz can't thrown out anybody anyway so you don't have to worry about that part of the game on defense. .

My first locked-in new Bingo square for 2026 is going to be: Yainer Diaz: # of walks drawn or % of basestealers caught, which is higher.

Right now he's walked 15 times and thrown out 13.4% of baserunners.

Last year he walked 24 times and threw out 22.9% of baserunners.

Looking at the rest of August…

Can we split .500 the 3 games against Boston and 3 against @Detroit?

For the other 14 games we get 7 games against Baltimore, 3 against the Rockies and 4 against the Angels. 3 of these 4 series are at home. The goal needs to be 9-5 or 10-4 here.

It's time to make our move in the next 3 weeks if we're going to be a serious contender.
