Walker is going to end up having a worse year 1 than Jose Abreu
is it still the oblique injury from spring training?
It was so depressing watching Abreu flail at pitches. First season Walker has 42 more strikeouts (172) than first season Jose thus far.
But it's Walker's glove (-1.3 dWAR) that's putting him ahead of Abreu (-.9 dWAR) in the end. First season Walker has been marginally less hapless at the plate, if still far below league average (92 OPS+ before the 0-3 with 3 Ks tonight).
He could still finish even with Abreu's -.1 bWAR if he plays as terribly as he has most of the season. It's bleakly funny we're paying $40 million for first base this year, when we've barely crested the $160 million mark ever for a player. The going salary is $300-500 million for a superstar.
Rolling the dice on FAs who can only get short term deals with AAVs far less than the best has unsurprisingly produced results that justified why they were purchased with coupons.
