I thought you guys hated Dusty. Perhaps there's a pattern here.

Cole had struck out in 7 of his last 13 ABs, including two Ks tonight. I think pinch hitting for him was the right call.

Over the last 17 ABs, he's 4 for 17 with 9K. Out of the 4 hits, he had 2 doubles and a HR.

Caratini is a better LHH. I disagree with your take, but get it.

At this point, I'm not sure I want the Astros to make the playoffs. This team is not good, and a lot of these problems are definitely from coaching. I would rather see a massive wake up call than to see these guys be given the benefit of the doubt because they still got the team into the playoffs despite all the injuries.

Or I'm just pissed off watching them crater, watching them be handed gift after gift and still finding a way to screw it up, and generally playing like they have a tee time on Tuesday

It's like he has no feel for the game at all. Sometimes, you gotta keep going with the hot hand regardless of matchup. This is over managing at its finest.

I agree 99.99%. I would change the first sentence to "He has no feel for the game at all."

I absolutely agree. This team was crippled by injuries and managerial ineptitude.

It needs leadership change and a retool for next year.

My manager knowledge is weak. Any good up and comers or established managers that would be available?

How healthy will Yordan/Paredes be by Opening Day and how will we augment the starting rotation?

Glad to see Blubaugh start tomorrow.

Maybe an extra month off won't be such a bad thing. Random stat: Altuve has 105 playoff games in his career.

I am now entering the acceptance stage.

the post-game show agrees with texags

Dana cannot run it back with the same 12 or 13 position players (even though all except Caratini are under contract for next season)

they don't work as a group with or w/o injuries -- too many flaws

Starting Jason Alexander, expecting him plus a Jayden Murray and a Bryan King to allow fewer than 4 runs against a MLB lineup was a tall ask.

Really never should have come down to needing a sweep this weekend.

the Astros will miss 1st half Framber

2.75 ERA in 19 starts

not sure how Dana will replace that

I think you go with an experienced manager even if he is a retread.

Hard to say when the lineup's heavy hitters have been out for extended time.

But Cole didn't look good tonight. He struck out following Yainer's leadoff double, got a lucky, weakly hit oppo double on a ball he chased out of the zone, and then struck out again. He swung at 8 pitches tonight and five were on pitches out of the strike zone. Add in a lefty being on the mound, and it just wasn't a good spot for Cole.

They are missing a few factors:

1. Another big bat or two. The current roster outside of Yordan and Paredes does not hit for enough power.

2. Some players that are like Michael Brantley. Work counts. Get on base. Do the small things. We don't have many of those.

Frankly, I want to see Diaz gone. This season was a disaster for him, and if this is "who he is" I don't want him on the team.

Meyers is disposable. Yes, he hits for average, but has no power.

Walker - get rid of him. His defense is awful and his bat is slow. Move Paredes to 1B. I don't care that he hit 25 home runs. That's the extent of his entire offensive contribution this season, and it's not enough to do the small things. Striking out relentlessly with men on base isn't going to win games. Being able to work counts and make contact is.

How do we know how the team operates without injuries? This lineup has been a revolving door of players all season.

Problem with improving the position players is that you would have to move good ones, or people aren't going to give you much for the less desirable ones.

You have a glut of starters but who can you move that isn't hurt?

Maybe Framber has damaged his value such that you can sign him to a shorter term deal then move him mid season for some value.

I guess in theory you need some prospects like Cole, Matthews and Ullola to make the jump next season, along with perhaps Cam Smith taking the next step.

The odds of Detroit or Cleveland getting swept, although very low, seems way higher than the odds of us actually winning 2 games in a row at this point
BadAggie

There's also the possibility Yordan and/or Paredes go under the knife in the off-season.

Feels like the path for off-season improvement is getting healthy and a couple shrewd free agent signings.

one issue...there's no room on the major league roster for Cole or Brice

if the 12 veteran players under contract return (plus a backup catcher as the 13th position player)

there's a logjam of below average hitters
W

once the reinforcements arrived on August 1st...Correa, Sanchez, Urias, and Pena...

the injury excuse for the offense largely goes away

Get rid of Meyers and play Altuve at DH or LF with Yordan

Get rid of Dubon.

Problem solved.

I think a culture change is in order and that means parting ways with Espada and Framber.

You have Peña, Yordan, Paredes, Altuve, and Correa as your top 5 position players/hitters.

Then whatever combo of Walker, Diaz, Smith, and Meyers.

Really could use a corner outfielder with some pop and above average OPS out of free agency, but how much more is Crane willing to spend?

Houston has to win out AND either Detroit OR Cleveland has to lose their last 2. Texas helped Houston today and Houston **** on their gift.

Yes, you now have a true glut where 2+ current position players have to be traded just to get to a legal roster.

1 starting IF has to go
And with 3 OF + DH + 3 non-C bench players, you have Yordan, Dubon, Urias, Smith, Meyers, Cole, Sanchez, Trammell, and Chas.

So without any upgrades, you have to dump Walker, Chas, and Trammell. If you add ANYTHING (and you need to), then you have to subtract one of Sanchez, Meyers, or Cole. Other than Cole, each of those guys makes multi-milluons in arbitration.

You lose Framber and non-tender Garcia.

You get free of the Abreu and Montero money. You eat half of the Walker money.

You still have to choose one of two extremes: go over the tax to extend the window and go aggressive, or rebuild through trades.

Running it back may fare better with health, but it is still too flawed. It is the one approach that would make no sense.
BadAggie

Likelihood seems high that Altuve and Paredes end up covering 2B and LF.

You'll get payroll relief when Framber walks.

BTKAG97
How long do you want to ignore this user?

They really need to consider trading Yordan. Altuve needs to DH fulltime until he retires and Yordan prevents that and he is far too injury prone for a man in his 20s. Besides, he's really the only player on the team with any significant trade value.

And as stated multiple times by others on this thread, they should try their damnedest to trade away Dubon, Diaz, and Walker.

Wild probably over reaction.

I'd be open to listening to offers for Pena and Yordan. If you can get solid solid packages for one or maybe both I think that might be the route to go. If not both take the best package for one of them.

Never thought I'd say those words but here we are.

I also move Walker no matter what. Even if you get basically nothing back besides the roster spot and salary relief.
BadAggie
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Unless you get a crazy offer for a Yordan coming off an injury plagued year then you wait

No sense in selling one of your top 2 players for less
