We have 27 games left. I figure we have to win 20 of them, with at least 4 of those 20 being over Houston. If you can do this, you're at 88 wins. It'll be real close, but we would have the tiebreaker on Houston. I feel like this is the only chance realistically left.

So looking ahead a bit, I wanted to prematurely discuss the coaching staff for next season. I get the feeling that Bochy may be leaning towards retiring again (if someone knows differently, please correct me). Assuming that is the case, and that if he does, will the likely replacement be Schumaker? If that were to be the case, I suspect there wouldn't be a tremendous amount of turnover in the coaching staff, although I think 2 or 3 might go. Could see Maddox retiring for example.
This brings me to my 2nd point, and I'm expecting quite a bit of pushback on this, but I think Boone gets another season as hitting coach. The offense has been the problem all season, but two points I would make: one, Boone was brought in during the season, which means he didn't get an off-season and spring training to try to get the team to buy into what he's preaching (situational hitting, less analytics, etc.). Hardly fair to do a complete evaluation on the job he's done given that. Secondly, if you go back and look, the team has slowly (agonizingly) gotten better with the things he was apparently brought in to address. I can't even give him a letter grade for his work this season, just an "incomplete".
If they do decide to move on from Boone, I just hope they would bring in someone with the same philosophy of moving runners, situational hitting, and not always swinging for the damn fences.

I think what he's saying is, Oakland and Arizona aren't as good at mailing it in as their opponents. Oakland is only 20-10 because their opponents have been more mailed in.
So transitive property if we mail it in less than Oakland and Arizona and their more mailed in opponents, then we should dominate into the postseason.

Yeah that sounds like a bit of optimism to keep people interested. 4-6 weeks recovery will effectively end his season.
Edit - he might could see some playing time if it's a laparoscopic appendectomy, but that's still the end of September
