The braying of the Donkey has gone silent, and no more will the spring air shatter with the sound of his bat swinging a foot over a ball at his ankles and outside of the zone.

The vicissitudes of the likes of Rockhead Baldelli and Ma Boone broke our hero's spirit to the point that he has joined a medieval pitcher's guild, never to return to the batter's box. We will not see his like again.

But as always, the show must go on, and even in our grief we await the coming of another great strikeout champion!

Milwaukee Brewers corner outfielder Jackson "Not Cheerio" Chourio came out swinging and missing, giving the Brew Crew exactly what you need from your leadoff hitter: an 0 for 5, 5 strikeout day (including a big 9th inning, one out swinging K with the tying run on second), achieving the year's first Platinum Sombrero.

Also Golden yesterday (4 Ks) were JT Realmuto of Philadelphia, Paul DeJong of the Gnats (may their bowels gush out for releasing Donkey), and Brent Rooker of the Oakland Las Vegas Zombie Athletics of Sacramento.

He has not looked good. Gotta think he's still steaming over losing his job to Bregman.

The New York Yankees, who ruined Donkey, are an embarrassment to baseball.

They have hit 8 home runs in 4 innings, including 3 on the first three pitches they saw today. You can't strike out if you put the first pitch in the seats.

Devers goes down again. 0-9, 8 Ks

Edit: and again! 9 K, still no hits although he did walk earlier

Devers strikes out for the 10th time in the first three games, which I believe is an MLB record. Rafael Donkvers

Clearly what Devers is doing is the talk of baseball, but don't sleep on Washington right fielder Dylan Crews, who is also off to a spectacular 0 for 9 start, with strikeouts in his last 6 consecutive at-bats (including donning the coveted Platinum Sombrero yesterday).

HEY YOU STUPID GNATS, IF YOU WANTED A GUY WHO COULD HIT .000/.111/.000 AND STRIKE OUT MORE THAN 50 PERCENT OF THE TIME, HERE'S A HINT: YOU HAD HIM!

CREWS IS STRIKING OUT LIKE A TREMENDOUS MACHINE!!!

HE IS 0 FOR 3 WITH THREE SWINGING Ks TODAY, AND IS ONE AWAY FROM TYING THE MAJOR LEAGUE RECORD FOR MOST STRIKEOUTS IN CONSECUTIVE PLATE APPEARANCES! (*)

ETA: History will have to wait for tomorrow as the Gnats, jealous as always of a strikeout artist, came up short of a 4th at-bat for Crews. He may not be Donkey, but right now this coon ass is looking like the hero we need.

*For a position player: the all-time record of 12 is held by no less a man than Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax.

This is shaping up to be a tremendous year for terrible batting, with or without KD

Although it is early to be dreaming of a challenger to the Immortal Reynolds at 223, I will be disappointed if the Minnesota Twins' single season team record of 1,654 does not fall this season.

Crews comes up short of the record with a groundout to third in the 3rd inning. The Gnats are doing a poor job striking out today with only 3 Ks, but are getting no-hit through 5, which is at least something.

The standard Tony Gwynn reference. Dever's next K will surpass Tony's season total in 1995.

Watching Altuve's performance today in person was, I'm not going to lie, emotional.

As hard as it may be to believe, before I became a fan of King Donkey I was (like many casual baseball observers) stuck in the past and felt that something like striking out 213 times per year was probably a bad thing. I paid so little mind to the noble strikeout that I am not sure that I have ever witnessed a Platinum Sombrero live.

I have seen King Donkey be Golden at least twice, but never saw him reach 5 Ks.

For Altuve to have done this today, at the Twins home opener, with the marked disadvantage of his tiny, hobbit sized strike zone, was one of the guttiest efforts I have ever seen from a professional athlete. I am so inspired that I even forgive him for banging on those trash cans.

I sincerely hope that he was covered in Opening Day bunting in the Astros locker room and recognized for the champion that he is.

To commemorate this event for you, I had Grok make take some liberties with the setting, and I present "Jose Altuve coming down from Mount Sinai with 5 k's"

In a premium Aggie game thread someone asked Brauny what comes after Golden Sombrero. Of course several offered up Platinum but Brauny said he calls it "The Welder's Shield," referencing Tuve's game last week.

That's gold Jerry! Never heard that one before.

If King Donkey gets 4,000 strikeouts as a pitcher, and adds them to his 1,292 Ks as a batter, he will still be 422 short of Nolan Ryan.

Last year's MVP runner-up, Bobby Witt, Jr. of the Royals has a golden sombrero today, and it is only the 6th inning! He will have a chance for platinum plated glory! Strikeouts are for everyone!

Here is his golden moment:

I am at a Washington Gnats game, and I don't think I know a single player in their lineup.

The idiot manager who ruined Donkey's career by not batting him leadoff has been fired, but it is too late.

The stadium is, naturally, half empty. Without the star power of King Donkey, what's the point??

The Gnats, hopelessly bereft at the strikeout position, were carried by their pitching tonight. They held the Twins to one run.

Unfortunately, the Gnats achieved zero runs. Some pug named Nathaniel Lowe, who is their replacement for Donkey at 1B, has ALREADY been given 385 ABs this year (160 more than Donkey got all of last season). He has -0.1 WAR to show for being an everyday player; Donkey got 0.3 WAR last year in limited opportunities.

Traditionalists who can't comprehend the beauty of the strikeout are destroying baseball.
