They had 9 HRs today and hit the first 3 pitches they saw in the game out of the park.

Few questions:

-Was today just a fluke or did the bats help that much?
-Is it legal?
-if it is legal, how the **** has no one done it yet?

all good questions. Don't know. The way the Yankees are being open about it you would expect that this had to be approved by MLB.

I just don't understand how something as simple as changing the shape of the bat hasn't been done before, if it does make that much of a difference.

Agreed. It's interesting. Could be a fluke game. Wind was blowing out. Facing former teammate Cortes, etc.

Why on earth would they not use them the first two games?

Assuming that new sweet spot is 2.61" or less they are perfectly fine. Not to mention all bat designs have to be approved by MLB first.

Quote:

According to the Official Rules of Major League Baseball [1]:

1.10
(a) The bat shall be a smooth, round stick not more than 2.61 inches in diameter at the thickest part and not more than 42 inches in length. The bat shall be one piece of solid wood. NOTE: No laminated or experimental bats shall be used in a professional game (either championship season or exhibition games) until the manufacturer has secured approval from the Rules Committee of his design and methods of manufacture.
(b) Cupped Bats. An indentation in the end of the bat up to one inch in depth is permitted and may be no wider than two inches and no less than one inch in diameter. The indentation must be curved with no foreign substance added.
(c) The bat handle, for not more than 18 inches from its end, may be covered or treated with any material or substance to improve the grip. Any such material or substance, which extends past the 18 inch limitation, shall cause the bat to be removed from the game. NOTE: If the umpire discovers that the bat does not conform to (c) above until a time during or after which the bat has been used in play, it shall not be grounds for declaring the batter out, or ejected from the game. (d) No colored bat may be used in a professional game unless approved by the Rules Committee.

Some of the really old bats back in the late 1800s were odd shaped too. Curious as well how no one else thought to do this before

Agree. If this gets it done, every team will jump into this.

Seems like this should be something presented in Spring Training rather than one team getting to bust it out in the regular season. And of course it's the Yankees that have it

My guess is that since it is not considered "new equipment" it didn't have to go through the MLB testing and trial procedures of using it in the Minors and Spring Training before being used in the big league.

It seems that MLB is viewing it similar to trying out new wood species for bats, as long as it meets the specs in the rules and is not a safety hazard, it is fair game. It is a copy cat league, LS is about to make a lot of money with rush shipments if it is proved that it actually makes a difference.

And they were both Yankee Stadium specials into the short porch in right field (346 and 342 feet).

If the Yankees go 162-0 and throttle the MLB HR record, will the bats be declared illegal?

And they're legal; Major League Baseball confirmed Sunday that the bats do not violate Major League rules or bat supplier regulations. Rule 3.02 states that bats cannot be more than 2.61 inches in diameter and 42 inches in length.

You just know if this was anyone other than the Yankes or Dodgers, there would be a cease and desist until a multi-month long investigation happened

If the Astros had started using these bats, there entire front office would be dismantled and they would lose their 1st round draft pick for a decade.

And then they would lose their first and second round picks for two years as punishment.

Pitchers gonna be allowed to use the sticky stuff too now?
If you can't handle the stress, log off until August. If you can handle the stress, be supportive and donate to United. No more buildings and concrete. Gotta channel funds to the collective for now.

I guess I don't understand this. The rule states it can't be thicker than 2.61" at the thickest part. If these are in compliance then that means for all these years all of MLB has been using bats that were not as thick as they could be…and that's makes no sense. Why would they not maximize bat size?

I feel like if the bats are within the rules, good on the Yankees for discovering this. Pitchers need to start working the outside corner on guys who use them. Realistically, Manfred is gonna ban them though.

This. WTF? Making the sweet-spot at max diameter (by borrowing from the end) if it wasn't before seems like the most simple idea ever.
