Manfred ruled that MLB's punishment of banned individuals ends upon their deaths.

"Obviously, a person no longer with us cannot represent a threat to the integrity of the game," Manfred wrote in a letter to attorney Jeffrey M. Lenkov, who petitioned for Rose's removal from the list Jan. 8.

"Moreover, it is hard to conceive of a penalty that has more deterrent effect than one that lasts a lifetime with no reprieve.

"Therefore, I have concluded that permanent ineligibility ends upon the passing of the disciplined individual, and Mr. Rose will be removed from the permanently ineligible list."

Pete Rose said he believed he'd make Hall of Fame 'after I die'

"I've come to the conclusion -- I hope I'm wrong -- that I'll make the Hall of Fame after I die,'' Rose said in the interview, which took place 10 days before his death. "Which I totally disagree with, because the Hall of Fame is for two reasons: your fans and your family. That's what the Hall of Fame is for. Your fans and your family. And it's for your family if you're here. It's for your fans if you're here. Not if you're 10 feet under. You understand what I'm saying?

"What good is it going to do me or my fans if they put me in the Hall of Fame couple years after I pass away? What's the point? What's the point? Because they'll make money over it?''

The hit king was always a Hall of Famer in the eye of millions. Shame on MLB.

Shame on the HOF. MLB didn't ban him from the Hall. MLB banned him from MLB and rightfully so. The butthurt Hall writers decided to make banned guys ineligible for the Hall. Manfred always said in no way should the criteria for someone to actually participate (or not) in official MLB games be the same as the criteria for being HOF eligible.

I really would prefer they just left it alone.
Pete deserved it in my opinion, but not now. Nobody played harder.
I never rooted for him but he loved the game.

I think the gamblers finally won. I get betting on games that you aren't part of; while I don't agree with it, you could do it.

But betting on games, in which you are a manager and directly responsible for, no. You loose the ability to be neutral.

Agreed that it should have been left alone.

I disagree with Pete's analysis here - or the honesty of his analysis. Its about him. Its not his family or fans bexause if it was then him being alive doesn't play a part. But with Pete, it was always about Pete.

Dude should be on the Mount Rushmore of victim card players.

Now that he is dead, I dont care one way or the other if he's inducted or not.

The real victims of the Hall are guys like Ron Santo and Buck O'Neil who didn't get in until after they passed. Shame on the Hall for that!

Except he never bet against his team, only on it.

He got a lifetime ban. He's dead. Ban ends. Simple.

MLB made a mistake with the lifetime ban

because it made this issue go on and on and on and on -- it never ends

and fans are so tired of it

the original punishment should have been a set finite period of time -- like 30 years

Even betting on your team to win makes a huge difference. Maybe he's got a big bet on tomorrow's game, so he doesn't doesn't play some guys he normally would; holding onto them for the game he's got money on.

We don't know the full extent of what he did. He only admitted to betting as a manager 15 years later when he had a book coming out. They know he bet on his team's games as a player, yet he always denied that aspect to his death. So why admit doing it as a manager but not a player? If you truly only bet on them, it's actually more acceptable as a player than a manager because at least you weren't making short vs long term tradeoffs on decisions. Perhaps it is because there is more shadiness that could be uncovered about the betting he did as a player, and the more info he gives, the more likely it's uncovered that he bet against them.

Or maybe he never "bet against" them, but maybe he did the occasional favor to clear a debt.

Here's the stupid thing about The Hall. When I was a kid, and I went to visit Cooperstown, they had a big section about the 1919 WS. They aren't shying away from it. They were still using it to sell tickets. Arguably, they've made the whole thing bigger by refusing to admit Shoeless Joe.
