I think he's just trying to shake things up. You can only put so much lipstick on the pig.
Two batters on this roster have shown to be legitimate producers over time, Seager and Nimmo.
Every other guy in the lineup either has/had question marks, whether it be young guys able to avoid sophomore/junior slumps (Wyatt, Carter), guys past their prime trying to squeeze out one more good year (Joc, McCutchen) or simply guys that you're hoping you get lucky with (Burger, Duran).
It's a roster constructed around two "aces" (DeGrom, Eovaldi) and three guys that can have major upside (Gore, Leiter, Rocker). That part of things is doing good enough. But that roster needs the offense to be competent, and for this offense to be competent either Seager has to be producing or you've got to hit on a high % of the question marks.
Seager hasn't been producing, and Jung is the only question mark we're hitting on.
I still don't hate where we are at - the road to being good enough to add a piece at the deadline to be a formidable playoff opponent is there... But the bats have to get us above water until then.
