How long do you want to ignore this user?
Thanks so much for sharing that.

I love traveling and this was really fascinating. I could seriously spend hours looking at photos from places like N.Korea.

I saw a documentary a while back called A State of Mind which was about N. Koreans preparing for a couple of N.Korean girls preparing for one of the mass games/events that they hold there. Worth a watch.

It is odd....NK is one of those few places that you can take pictures of just about anything and it is somewhat intriguing. Or...at least I feel that way.

This has made me want to go there even more. Until now, I had not known anyone to actually go to NK....now I know what to expect and am willing to give it a shot.

It's a destitute country with no concern for basic human rights. You should read about the lives of some of the prisoners that escaped their labor camps, as it only compares with Nazi Germany. I would never provide any funds or support for a nation like that.

Here's a snippet of the labor camp life from Shin Dong-hyuk, who was born in a labor camp and lived there until he escaped (from Wikipedia):

When his mother and brother attempted to escape, Shin was thrown into a small underground cell, where it is impossible to either stand or lie down, and was kept there and tortured for eight months.[11]
Shin described how, at the age of 14, he was completely stripped, his legs cuffed and hands tied, and suspended from the ceiling of his cell. His torturers then lit up a charcoal fire under his back and forced a hook into his skin so that he could not struggle.[12] He still has a number of large scars from the flesh burned and from many other abuses.[13]
Later Shin was forced to watch the execution of his mother Chang Hye-kyong by hanging and his brother Shin Ha-kun by firing squad.[14] [15]
When Shin worked in the garment factory and accidentally dropped a sewing machine, the foreman hacked off his middle finger just above the first knuckle as punishment.[16]
Shin witnessed dozens of public executions each year.[1] Another prisoner Kim Yong witnessed around 25 executions in his section of the camp within less than two years.[17]
Shin saw a six year old girl in his school being beaten to death for stealing 5 grains of corn.[1]
When Shin was 12 years old, he was separated from his mother and rarely allowed to see her. Instead of attending school, the children had to do all kinds of physical work including weeding, harvesting, carrying dung.[18]
Between the ages of 13 and 16, Shin was forced to do dangerous construction work and saw many children killed in work. Sometimes, four to five children were killed in a day. On one occasion, he saw eight people killed by an accident.[19]
Shin’s cousin was raped by prison guards and died later and when his cousin’s mother wailed, she disappeared and was never seen again.[20]
Shin saw how twelve fellow prisoners were given toxic water for washing by the guards and got seriously ill within a week and then disappeared.[20]
When Shin escaped through the high-voltage electric fence surrounding the camp, his friend Park Yong-chul got electrocuted.[1]

You can read more about his life and other refugees on the web. It's truly sickening.

I've read that book and many others like it. Travel to places like that is admittedly selfish and mostly for spectacle, I'll admit that, but my thousand or so dollars will not have a tangible impact when they have a burgeoning illegal arms and drugs industry that brings in millions.

Rick Steves has a great lecture on Hulu called Travel as a Political Act.

North Koreans are told from birth that the American Imperialists shoot babies, want to hurt them, and want to enslave them. If I can go to where they are and attempt to show them that I am none of those things, it could possibly make them question what they heard from their "dear leader". Those moments of doubt are seeds for revolution.

I have read that book as well. No one ever claims that it is the "right" thing to do. I sort of agree with the above poster that these people are force fed bad information about how bad Americans and Western people are. You go there, and you present yourself as a respectable culture. Granted, most of the people that you see are in Pyongyang and are of the privileged class anyways.

If you look at what it costs to do this - around $1k for 4 nights, it includes flights, hotels, food, transport, guides, etc etc. As crappy as the place is, those people are getting paid as well. You get to interact with "some" common people who probably are just as intrigued with you as you are with them. I see it more as a cultural exchange thing.

My biggest issue with it is the way the serve food to you. They overfeed you to show off the food. I would feel guilty about that part in NK.

I feel the exact same way about Cuba - there government may suck, but having more info on the outside world is only going to help things. If no one went there, then the people in NK would have no idea about the outside world. I also feel that the internet age has brought down many oppressive governments already - Libya, Egypt, hopefully Iran and Syria, etc - that may not have fallen before the internet age. Information to them cannot hurt regardless how small it is. There is a demand for "outside" TV and music in NK already.

Defroach,

I understand your position and agree that the income from your visit is immaterial to the total income received by the government; however, I could never provide any income to government that is so abusive to its people.

Even the most privileged North Koreans live a secluded lifestyle. I have a North Korean friend that is a certain ambassador's granddaughter and we couldn't even eat together alone; even during meals she is supervised. While living in another country, she had to go home after classes and was only allowed to watch cartoons on TV. She was 20 at the time. I never brought up politics and tried to be as positive and open as possible, so that I could project a positive image of the US. I don't live in that country anymore and we have mostly lost contact, but her situation was very bizarre.

Oh, I completely understand where you are coming from. My wife is the same way, she would never step foot in there and would be pissed if I gave them money as well.

But, she also knows that I travel a ****load and will eventually go there. But, yeah, that is an interesting perspective on things from your point.

The way their government is is absolutely sickening. In a way, I am happy that the new leader has spent a good amount of time in Europe becacuse it cannot hurt having that perspective at least.

Dammit, now I got myself watching vice videos...onto the Balkans one. It definitely does remind me of many of nights drinking in the Balkans so far...

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Well, this one is my brothers trip, but it is what I spend all my vacation on. I've been to a little over 60 and I am 28. None for any business trips. I grew up in Dubai so I had a lot of Europe done by the time I was out of high school.

But it is just an addiction.

FWIW, my brother is 30 and has something like 85, but is single, so he can do odd things like this a lot easier.

Sounds like the life. I'm 21 and have been to 23 countries, but I have no idea once I start working full time in a couple years how I'm going to keep it up with the lack of vacation days.

You'll end up doing way too much in too little time, like my Hong Kong-Vietnam-Tokyo trip over 6 days later this month.

One thing about Cuba. Remember it's only Americans that are not legally allowed there, and it's not the Cubans stopping you.

It is a normal vacation destination for Europeans.
defroach
How long do you want to ignore this user?
And Canadians...

If you end up with 3 weeks of vacation starting, you should be just fine. I usually do one longer trip (2 weeks off, usually around a holiday) and get a couple countries in (aka do a Bolivia/Peru type trip) and then use one week off going somewhere else (one week off = 10 days, easy to do most locations).

If you plan that around holidays, you will still have some time left over to take a day or two to do other things.

Hell, with a M or F holiday, you can take off a day around it, end up with a 4 day weekend, and get a central american country down.

Also, about Cuba, I don't think they've ever once allowed a case to go to trial enforcing that penalty.

I'm 29, and have been to around 30 countries, looking forward to crossing 3 more off the list later this month. That'll be 5 continents as well, saving Australia/NZ for my honeymoon someday and Antarctica for when I'm old.

About the Cuba fine....ironically....just the other day

http://travel.usatoday.com/destinations/dispatches/post/2012/07/us-tourist-ordered-to-pay-6500-fine-for-illegal-cuba-trip/812249/1

Antarctica has been on my list for a long time. I know someone that did that last year. It isnt my type of travel, but I want to do it.

Other places of interest in the near future are Bhutan and Tibet. I really like mountainy terrain and Asian cultures...so they really intrigue me.

I really want to start knocking out some of the 'stans.

Georgia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan (for the potassium) are next on my list I think.
defroach
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Georgia has been on my list for a long time. Actually, it mainly entered my list in Russia after eating Georgian food. Now it is fairly high.

I want to do the Georgia/Armenia/Azerbaijan trifecta to clear them out over a longer trip.

My brother, however, will be getting those after he goes to Iraq and buses it to Turkey and then Armenia....
defroach
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Also, we have been planning on doing the 'stans via the Mongol Rally some year in the near future.

For those who dont know what the mongol rally is, you buy a car less than 10 years old and you drive it to mongolia from england. You then donate the car. The car cannot have an engine size more than something like 1.2L. You choose your own route, but there are somewhere near 400-500 teams each year doing it.

So we are always open to other people tagging along for a 2nd car.

NK is not really ripe for a revolution. Or really very close to it.

And for the guy that noted Rick Steves, it's not so much that they think we're savage imperialists...it's that they think they're racially pure and superior. There's a very good book on this. Most people get NK politics all wrong.
