I inherited some farmland when my father passed away. There was no will and my mother didn't want to deal with it so there a long process with probate.
Finally it all got done and it transferred from my dad's estate to my mom then to me on January 6th of this year. It had an ag exemption on it.
I was told that because the property had an ag exemption under my dads estate as of 1/1/2025 that it would stay the entire year and that I would have to file a new ag exemption for it being under my name before April 30th for 2026….
However, I just got the appraisal notice from Colorado county and the taxes owed for 2025 just jumped from $316 (paid last year) to near $9,000…..
Am I screwed? Was I given incorrect information? Or did they make a mistake?
I should add I also have land inherited that's in Wharton county and I just checked everything there and that still looks correct for taxes owed for 2025….i.e. still appears the ag exemption is there due to taxeble values being so low….
