Only time I've ever protested my property taxes was when I purchased my second home and the it was easy because I could just show them my closing docs where I paid less than their appraised value.

My property taxes took a large jump again this year and I need to protest it. I've pulled comps of a half dozen different properties from the tax district appraisal website showing similar house sizes and acreages and their tax appraisals per acre and per sq foot of house/shop much lower than mine. I've also got a couple of current similar listings that show a much lower value.

Anything else I need to take with me when I protest this thing?

Pictures of how big of a dump your house is.

That worked for me for a couple of years. "Look at this sh/t hole. Ain't no way it should be valued this high."

Yes, pictures of things that are in disrepair. This comes with a caveat that those pictures are often stored by the appraisal district and could come back to bite if you sell without disclosing items that weren't repaired. Other thing is to get comps that are in your favor.

So another follow up question. Do you guys upload your comps into their electronic filing system before you meet with them or just print everything out and take it in folder with you to present at the time they are reviewing your case? Not sure which way would work better but I thought about scanning in all my comps from the tax website with my notes written on them?

I don't think it matters.
I just had my protest hearing and I had evidence submitted electronically beforehand and brought new physical evidence when I showed up.

For the board it was their first time seeing both information when I presented.

You probably save time for the clerk having to scan everything in if you do it in advance.

A good suggestion is to go to HEB and get a 12 pack of beer and have it iced down for when you get home. It helps to lower your blood pressure and calm you back down back down after nearly having a heart attack or stroke dealing with them.
