When Chris Beard (allegedly) smacked his longtime girlfriend around, the Austin sportswriter cabal immediately and successfully lobbied for Rodney Terry as his replacement. Never mind that Beard's gf almost immediately recanted and said it was just another argument, Beard was sent packing and Terry promoted.
I think Texas fans don't want a Big Dance invite and are ready to move on from the Rodney Terry experiment - he's been a .500 coach vs SEC talent, plus he's a dead ringer for Gus Fring of BREAKING BAD:

Come on, Texas only fired Beard because it had to after investigation into his alleged strangling and noshing on his fiance before absconding ahead of the arrival of the local constabulary. He had the program rolling and recruiting was taking off. Texas is no stranger to sweeping things under the rug, and apparently this one wouldn't fit.
Practically every battered partner of a high earning spouse/boyfriend whose job is subject to public scrutiny recants when they realize they'll otherwise be punishing themselves financially.
Before the video of Ray Rice punching Janay Rice broke she apologized for her role in the incident (which turned out to be getting knocked out and dragged around by her hair).

. . . The Ravens hold a news conference with Rice and Palmer. Rice apologizes for "the situation my wife and I were in." The Ravens live-tweet the event, including one that reads, "Janay Rice says she deeply regrets the role that she played the night of the incident." That tweet has since been deleted. . . .
Nor was there anything immediate about Terry being hired full time as head coach following Beard's sacking in the first part of Jan. 2023.
Terry was only made the full time coach after Texas made the Elite 8, which was tied for the 2nd best finish ever for Texas. How do you not give him a chance to run it back after that?
At least Texas envisioned it wouldn't be too long before the Horns were in the market again. While Beard had a $35 million 7 year contract, Terry was given just a $15.3 million 5 year contract, and the buyout is just $5.3 million at this point.
