That 1/8 to 1/4 inch - you can't tell you're not right up in the ceiling/wall crack. Get a good brush and you'll get good enough to do that along your baseboards, too.
or do like the pros and run a caulk line so it looks like a robot painted it.
I'm literally having my entire basement painted right now, and this method results in a perfectly straight, white line between wall and ceiling. From what I can tell, their method is;
Primer first, always.
1. Paint the ceiling, don't worry about getting it on walls.
2. Paint the walls, but don't over shoot on to ceiling more than a fraction of inch.
3. Put tape on walls, and run white caulk line. Touch up ceiling if you missed when doing the walls.
Same with baseboards.
1. Paint walls, don't have to get close to baseboards.
2. Spray baseboards. It will overspray onto walls. If spray not an option do it by hand.
3. Place tape on top of baseboards.
4. Paint walls up to tape.
5. Run a white caulk line on top of baseboards.
If you ever want to get a perfect line with tape, just put down a bead of clear silicone on the paint edge. Then paint. When you pull up tape, ZERO paint will bleed under the tape because the silicone was there to seal it.
