Interested in the boards thoughts on this, we'll obviously consult with someone. We're looking at maybe doing a patio extension. Ideally the typical gabled roof style that's pretty common these days but really struggling with how that will work with these odd rooflines/pitches. Is that going to be difficult to work with or likely not an issue?

Note we are not planning to extend the portion above the big windows, maybe just a pergola over there

You might just be better off doing a single slope roof from ridge of lower roof out over entire new covered area. Not sure a gable will look real good it will be so flat.

Not really an issue. The engineers deal with this every day and will have a solution. And, you will need an engineer since you are tying into the roof.

Gable or hip style shouldn't be to difficult to figure out.

While it's not as visually appealing an insulated aluminum panels system with Alumawood or an equivalate is going to get you more bang for your buck and be a very low maintenance option. Those can be attached right to the fascia so you erase any issues, complications, and expenses associated with attached to the roof.

tgivaughn: I had something very similar to your latter pics built at my house in Eugene, OR.

It was a pretty easy install and I did like the fact that it still allowed lots of ventilation and didn't "trap" any heat under the cover and still allowed an upward vent between the cover and the house. We went with the metal cover since we wanted shade and the plastic ones always feel like you are in a green house in warm weather.

Ours actually extended over the house roof a couple of feet and was lag-bolted to the existing structurelike this:

Astute bullet points that I try to sell to the hard-line conventional + as well as Costs, DIY and foolproof solution for most problems.
Now if we can afford wood that doesn't rot, this is golden.

Kudos, well done, good photo!

I don't think it's going to be a big deal. When the engineer is done drawing it up, have a qualified roofer look at the result before moving forward. There is sometimes miles of distance between "this looks fine on paper" and "let's make it not leak." Make it a team effort and you'll ensure success all the way around.

I highly recommend reaching out to Cover Your Pergola. I'm VERY happy with the job they did for me. Where (generally) do you live?

We did a gable off a lower pitch roof and carried it into the center ridge vent area at the peak of the house. It turned out great and looks great. Required us going about 20-25 ft in from the exterior wall to tie into the existing pitch. Get it drawn up with a reputable architect and it will look nice. Personal advice - take what you think you want in patio size and double it. I don't know anyone that has regretted going larger.
