I had post this over on the academic board and was advised to bring it here. Appreciate any feedback.

Family made a tour of College Station this weekend. Really loved the Culture, Tradition and Engineering Dept. My son my had a desire to be a part of the military academy. He was accepted into the USAFA and interviewed with West Point multiple times. After acceptance to The USAFA he stopped looking anywhere else and was excited for the opportunity. In late April the academy rescinded the acceptance, all schools actually, disqualified him for a small health concern. Kid is super healthy and disciplined in eating habits and working out. This is all background info of course but after the reroute he has decided to join the Aggie family and the Corps of Cadets. My question is he is an out of state student. Joining the Corp will waive all out of state fees.
How difficult is it to get other financial scholarships. He plans to apply August 1 for the spring semester. He was a straight A cat all through high school. Lettered in Football, Golf and Track. Earned Valedictorian of his class and is just a dang fine kid who believes in eye to eye conversation and handshakes. Old school politeness to the core.He really fell in Love with the school. It was an amazing time for us all and He has that light in his eye after all the military misfortune.
I believe he has the merit to be accepted but wondering with that size of school how generous the university and core is with financial assistance in the form of scholarship. Appreciate any and all comments.

Your best bet is to contact A&M and the Corps directly.

Here's a START. Lots of contact info.

This is where you start.

As an aside my grandson is applying to dental school and Texas has a common app for all 4 Texas schools. I was talking to a board member who was giving tips on getting accepted. Some tidbits:
-If the application says 3 essays and 1 is acceptable do 3.
-Don't apply for multiple disciplines on 1 app. I.E. don't lump medical and dental school apps in one submission to save yourself time.
-Don't ignore volunteer time, when every application is dominated by great grades the differentiator is often the extracurricular activities.

Btw, in case you're not aware, Rookie level users (between 0-30 posts) are only allowed to start 1 topic and make 5 replies during a 24 hour period.

If you buy a basic subscription, which is about $5for one month, those limits do not apply.

Best wishes. A&M is a great place.

Is he still interested in military service? Talking with a bunch of my zoomie buddies over the years apparently a high percentage of applicants get DQ initially for minor medical issues that can be overturned with some effort. But all this to say that if he's still interested look into some ROTC scholarship options. And, with his athletic background, I'd be remiss if I didn't encourage him to look at E-1. Good luck

If he even can play air guitar, I encourage him to join the Fighting Texas Aggie Band!

A large number of applicants get "disqualified" for a medical concern. This doesn't mean that it cannot go through. Depending on the condition, you can apply for a waiver to the condition. The system is set up with a very tight net. Yet if the condition has been managed, won't effect their ability to deploy, be in a field environment, etc. a waiver can be issued. If he wants to go to USAFA (which I recommend over USMA)... even though I was the senior medical officer at USMA for a couple years... reach out to the regional officer and see how he would go about getting a waiver.

I second Jock07 and Zulu 451. There are waivers for many medical issues. The academies and 4 year scholarships are especially strict on what they will waive.

DOD instruction 6130.03 may help you in assessing the possibility of a waiver.

My son is a highschool junior planning to attend A&M, but was born premature so I've dug into the medical side quite a bit try to get ahead of any possible issues.

I went thru the Army flight school in 1968, a classmate had gone right to the very end claiming the scar on his stomach was an appendix scar. 2 days before graduating we took a final physical and one doc pointed at the scar and asked "What is that because it's not appendix?" It was a spleenectomy and for some reason that was a military disqualifier. He met the chief surgeon of the hospital who was prepared to cut him loose when my friend said "I know how to fly helicopters, you've spent a ton on money on me already and I'm going to get killed in Vietnam anyway, why kick me out?" He got a waiver, survived Vietnam and retired 20 ears later as an LTC.
You just have to know what to say.
