On the eve of Operation Desert Storm, at the end of the final pre-war briefing in January 1991, Secretary of Defense Richard Cheney asked the VII Corps commander, "How will it all end?"

The 35th anniversary of America's final conventional conflict of the twentieth century offers us an opportunity to reflect on its nature. Historian, Desert Storm veteran, and author Stephen Bourque examines the war from tactical, operational, and strategic perspectives. He challenges the perspective that it was a simple, decisive victory, and reminds us how the Allied Coalition fought it, how it ended, and how we should remember this war as an event in American history.

Join us as we welcome Professor Stephen Bourque on Wednesday, February 18, at noon in the Malek Theater of the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library & Museum. The event is free but seating is limited. Reservations are strongly encouraged.

Saddam nakedly attacked his weaker neighbor and turned most of the world against him, then he stopped.

We had moral authority and all the time we wanted to build up and plan, then attack on our terms with precisely the doctrine we had trained to against the same equipment. The terrain was basically a giant sandy billiard table, with nothing to interfere with our radio or satellite comms.
I miss having enemies like Saddam that would give us exactly the fight we wanted.

The men that sweated and sometimes bled in the desert deserve their place in our storied history, because victory is always hard earned.

Without your sacrifices, Kuwait would be Iraq's 19th province instead of a sovereign nation and ally trying to shoot down all our damn F-15s

I think it's important to remember that Saddam had 500,000 troops at the border ready to cross into Saudi Arabia, and was declaring his intention to do so before the US got involved. The ME was on the verge of being overrun by Iraq's army. The Saudis asked us (and the UN) to intervene, and paid our expenses to do so.
