My lovely wife left our garage freezer door open for about 11 hours (midnight to 11 am). A pack of chicken breast and thighs were still partially frozen, so I assume those are probably ok. Two packs of ground pork were completely thawed. Would you throw them out or take a chance?

Dealing with this exact scenario right now, except it was my 10 year old son who grabbed an ice cream sandwich late last night. Most everything was either partially frozen or still really cold. Don't think we lost anything.

Everyone's household budget is different, no doubt. Also, I don't know how big the bag of chicken was. But, me personally, I'd throw out the chicken. I doubt it's a $50 bag. As for the pork, again, unless it's some special pork I'd throw it out also.

I hate getting sick and I wouldn't touch either of those. That's my personal "contingency", "conservatism", whatever you want to call it. Everyone is different and everyone's budget is different.

This happened to us several times, losing anywhere from a bag of frozen lobster tails to some bomb pops. A total freezer loss can suck. We bought a wifi temp probe off amazon that sends us an alert if the temp rises. It's saved our ass a few times after a kid has once again left it cracked open.

Speaking from an honest will to be educated I have questions.

I live in a household where my wife and daughter will throw away ANYTHING that is even close to the SELL BY date. So in the above scenario, anything in question will be thrown away.

They are shocked when I remind them of my bachelor years whew leftovers definitely lasted at least all week

Not that I would fight to keep that chicken and pork, but if you properly cooked it to temperature wouldn't that kill anything harmful that might have developed in a frozen environment that got slight above freezing?

Somehow I think we have gotten WAY too worried about this kind of thing in the modern world, but I'm not positive if I am right or wrong.

Obviously as others have said, err on the side of caution. Not only are budgets different, but so are immune systems. That said, I would eat everything if still cool. I see it as no different than thawing on kitchen counter if not out so long that it came to ambient temperatures. But to me expiration dates are suggestions so my immune system may be a little stronger.

If it is still cold or partially frozen, you're good.

Is the pork warm or just room temperature? If they're still cold, I'd go ahead and cook and consume them. If they're anything above room temperature, toss them.
