I feel that these are very personal drinks - the experienced bourbon drinkers have their own, specific spins on this drink. It's one of the few cocktails I enjoy but don't make at home.

Anyone care to share their favorite versions?

Sorry if this has been a topic that's been discussed. I tried the search function but using the word "old" generate a wide range of topics...

I don't do anything special with mine (sugar cube, bitters, large ice cube), but I do think it is best with WT101.

My standard recipe is bourbon with 3 dashes of angostura bitters, a teaspoon of simple syrup or a sugar cube, a luxardo cherry, and an orange peel.

Sometimes I use a teaspoon of the luxardo cherry syrup instead of simple syrup.

Another variation is bourbon with 2 dashes of walnut bitters and a teaspoon of real maple syrup. It's probably more appropriate with Canadian whisky but I don't keep any of that so bourbon does just fine, rye would work as well.

One final one would be Irish whisky with 2 dashes of orange bitters, simple syrup or a sugar cube, and an orange peel.

A mezcal old fashioned made with chocolate bitters is fantastic. The only other rule I'd add is don't use and expensive booze for this. All the nuance gets washed out in the sugar and bitters.

5 dashes each of orange bitters and cocoa bitters, a Luxardo cherry and a local Texas honey infused bourbon from Bastrop.

There is a local distillery in Bastrop called Copper Shot. The owner/master distiller makes a regular and barrel proof TX bourbon but his real gem is he does infused bourbons. He has a pecan one and a honey one. The honey bourbon is a fantastic mixer for an Old Fashioned. I use that without any sugar or simple syrup. It's the perfect level of sweetness.

Thanks all. I get an Old Fashioned when I go out but that experience is varied. I usually take bourbon neat or with a little ice. So, no experience with bourbon cocktails.

Love a good Old Fashioned - that's my go-to night out cocktail. I've also come to like Manhattan's as well (over a big cube).

You always seem to put your foot there.

Skip the sugar cube entirely. Couple of maraschino cherries and candied orange peel instead. Giant ice cube. Bourbon of choice level with top of cube. 3 shakes of angustura.

WithCo Ellis Old Fashioned mix is my go-to. Great with Anejo tequila too.

Counterpoint: trying higher proof or single barrel offerings can really make an Old fashioned unique.
Years ago one of my favorite bars, Eight Row Flint had a single barrel WhistlePig offering that tasted like bubblegum. It made a FANTASTIC Old Fashioned.

I generally try to use something over 100 proof, sugar cube, and luxardo cherry. Everything else is experimental.

Also have a smoking cabinet that I enjoy once in a while.

Simple is best imo, so bourbon with sugar and angostura bitters--but adding some black walnut bitters really takes it up a notch. Maybe some smoke as well with a cocktail smoker kit if you're really feeling fancy. Sometimes I'll also add orange bitters, but always at least an orange peel.

Here is my go to. Very easy, even my 88 year old dad even makes this for my mom...and 100% hit rate on enjoyment from all who try it.
1. 2 shots of bourbon (I like high proof, high rye versions but any will do)
2. 1 shot of Licor 43 (Spanish sweet citrus vanilla flavor, $30 ish and easy to find)
3. 3 shakes of Angostura bitters
4. stir or shake and pour over ice
5. put in one Luxardo Maraschino Cherry (don't skimp on this!)

The Liquor 43 is key!

Another option...try one shot of Knob Creek Smoked Maple as one of the 2 shots - use "regular" non flavored bourbon for the second.

Enjoy!

My favorite and default OF recipe - pleases both the bourbon and rye lovers. I almost always batch make this and keep it in a corkcicle thing so I'm not spending half my evening making them for people (think like 4x or 6x the recipe).

2 oz Buffalo Trace Bourbon or Knob Creek Bourbon
2 oz Bulleitt Rye
1/2 oz Liber & Co gum syrup
6-8 dashes of Angostura bitters

Because I batch make I usually stir these ingredients with ice in a 4 cup Pyrex measuring glass. I add just enough ice to dilute it to the best taste then pour it into glasses with fresh ice (regular or big cubes).

For garnish I use an Amarene Cherry and Candied orange peel - both can be found at Total Wine near their syrups and bitters.

I have a wood chip smoking kit too, but we serve this as is 95% of the time and people love them.

Yeah, definitely this. The cherry juice has plenty of sugar in it.

I need to try it with a candied orange peel.
