But I still cannot remove them from my notification list like I can other notifications.

Meaning, all other notifications, I can swipe, and it gives me the option to delete them. The breaking news notifications. I cannot do that at all. They are there forever. I want to remove them.

They don't go away ever? Or you swipe them gone and they come back?

Mine go away and don't come back unless someone I follow comments, or I comment and it created the bookmark.

they seem to go away after a few weeks, but really clutter up the rest of my messages/topics I like to quickly review. Unlike regular topics, I cannot swipe them away.

1. Bad link

2. Still a problem that I cannot seem to have addressed.

The link works on desktop or mobile web, for the app just click the gear icon or the three dots for the more menu. This will allow you to edit your notifications and/or switch your display to show only Unread Notifications. The latter will be the only way to not see prior breaking news (or any non-bookmark) notifications.

Though I understand you can remove bookmark-related notifications by deleting the bookmark, notifications are generally not intended to be deleted. If you do not wish to see prior notifications, switching to only show unread notifications is the recommend option.
