Measurables? He's a 6'4" white boy who isn't a good shooter playing in a league that values athleticism and shooting.
I have no doubt that he's absolutely worked his tail off. He also had some lucky bounces go his way. Nothing wrong with that.
After going undrafted and with a VERY short stent with the76ers, he was able to sign with OKC's g-league team, who had an assistant that is now his head coach.
I'm not insulting the guy at all. I'm super happy for him and his game is obviously working out well for him.
He was "able" to be signed to a G league team because he was good. He shined in the G League summer ball and showcases. LA Lakers offered him a 2 way contract- the first ever for a G League player. When he was given chances by the Lakers, he was GREAT. And he just kept getting better. Lakers ownership fumbled his contract and fans were sick when he actually turned them down and took the Chicago offer.
His being traded from Chicago had EVERYTHING to do with Chicago's other players. Caruso himsef was one of the hottest trade commodities in the NBA in the Spring as Bulls kept turning down offers. Eventually they got real value for Caruso. The NBA world knew OKC made a great trade in trying to complete their missing pieces that could bring them a championship. They weren't just doing some kind of favor for Caruso when letting Josh Giddy go.
Your post makes it seem like Caruso was some obscure player that a former G league assistant decided to take a flyer on because he knew him back when.
No, Caruso is probably the ultimate "self-made NBA player" if there ever was one. Google Caruso and Lakers if you want to see a fanbase still smarting from the day Caruso left.
