A little dense for me to summarize…

  • For the last 20-ish years teams can play 29 games per season, but if they participated in a multi team event (MTE), those games only counted as one game. So effectively teams have been able to play 31 regular season games if they're in an MTE. (this is kind of an oversimplification because if you're not in an MTE you can only play 28 games, but effectively everyone is in some kind of MTE because of this exemption rule, why MTEs are sometimes called "exempt games" or "exempt tournaments.")

  • The rule change would eliminate that exemption, making all games count the same, and allow everyone to play up to 32 games

Pros:
  • This would free up team's scheduling quite a bit and give us more regular games
  • Without dancing around all of the MTEs, Conferences could potentially move up conference games to earlier in the season and spread out the non-con games (a little like college baseball does) which I think would be good for the sport

Cons:
  • This is going to probably kill a bunch of MTEs that don't have good attendance or TV deals, I guess that's a con if you run one of these things, and having a thousand tournaments going on during Thanksgiving is awesome

Thanks. I saw it and wasn't familiar with the MTE acronym.

Events that are worthwhile and which teams want to play in, and fans want to watch will remain viable.

Events that exist solely to be the exempt event to make sure everybody can schedule one will go away.

32 games. I remember when they cut it to 26 in the early 90's. 20 win season meant something then.
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough

conceptually i like the idea of the MTE becjsee at least in some cases it leads to some decent match ups early in the season. however i think big picture moving to 32 total games for everyone seems to be more fair. as others have stated 20 wins is a marker of success but i have noticed over the years some teams played more games and that seemed a bit unfair because of that 20 win plateau and the perception that comes with it for the ncaa tourney. ultimately this just means more potential games which as a fan i like.
