I think I believe Billy from what he was saying on the radio this morning. Basically said he doesn't know for certain one way or another and that Trev won't make a final decision until he speaks with Earley.

I did find it interesting though how he basically confirmed that we did start putting feelers out after the Mizzou series "just in case a change was needed". Then implied that a lot of the smoke regarding it is coming from the agent side. Which would be due to us having put the feelers out there. Said he doesn't expect any decision in the coming days and that it would probably be until the weekend or early next week before we know one way or another.

I concur.

Now who's a great coach that you think we can obtain right now.
Neither you or I know the answer to this because we don't know the situations of the coaches, what sort of discussions they've had with their Universities about NIL, 34 scholies, facility investments, etc.

With all of the, "yeah but..." out of the way here's the people that I personally wish we would talk to broken into tiers.

Tier 1:
  • Brian O'Connor, UVA (will UVA pony up for scholarships and NIL?)
  • Kevin O'Sullivan, UF (hoping his personal situation might have him moving, unlikely)
  • Erik Bakich (hope and a prayer, unlikely)

Tier 2:
  • Rob Vaughn, Bama (young, moderate success in the SEC, Texas boy)
  • Dan McDonnell, Louisville (You'd have to ask, "what happened? and why?")
  • Mitch Canham, Oregon State (might be nice to actually play a few home games Mitch!)
  • Dan Fitzgerald, KU (this one may be too high but he's one I believe in. Limited track record but consistent improvement at a non-baseball school. History at DBU and LSU on the recruiting trail)

Tier 3:
  • Wes Johnson, Georgia (limited track record, but impressive so far)
  • Butch Thompson, Auburn (wins more than I give him credit for in the premier conference)
  • Cliff Godwin, ECU (could he carry success to a major program?)
  • Mark Wasikowski (can he win without Nike money? Is he tired of traveling to Happy Valley for a road trip?)

It's far from a complete, or perfect, list and it's sort of off the top of my head, but like most on this board I've been thinking about it for awhile. Vitello, Van Horn, etc. aren't on the list because I don't think they're attainable. Bakich probably isn't either, but I put him on nonetheless. I think Forbes is a really good coach as well, but he's never coached outside of a very small geographic region in the Carolinas, and I don't think he has any interest in leaving.

Of the probably attainable ones on there I'd say my rough wish list would be:

1. Brian O'Connor
2. Rob Vaughn
3. Dan Fitzgerald/Wes Johnson
If a change is made for me Rob Vaughn is 1a and Mitch Canham 1b. Try the Tier 1 stuff but its all a long shot unless the timing is right for a top tier coach to be ready to make a move.

Sub Wes Johnson for Skip Johnson as UGA gave Wes a big extension last week. I am not interested in Mark Wasikowski but I keep seeing his name. Surprised there hasn't been more talk of Butch Thompson to State honestly. What do you think of Pollard?

Already a lot of chatter within the Select Baseball side as sources are saying Earley won't be back. I'm afflicted as Operations Director with one of the biggest Select clubs in the country. These are the same sources last year back in April that Schloss was leaving & already been planning before our Regional. This turned out true. These guys usually in tune with what's going to happen.

Personally he doesn't wow me. I know he has some real disadvantages (probably the worst park in the ACC) but he's been the head coach at Duke for a dozen or so years now. He makes the Regional field about half the time, the Supers maybe a quarter of the time.

In fairness it's hard for me to judge from afar how much he's hamstrung by being at Duke compared to the other schools. And they are consistently better as his reign has gone along. But I'm not really moved to stump for him. He's also spent almost his entire career in North Carolina without a lot of experience outside that region. I'd rather have seen at least a little regional diversity, or more top end wins.

I can't put my finger on why I like him as much as I do aside from his teams being fun to watch. Not my first pick or even top 5 but I think he'd be solid. Heard State might want him. He's an alum iirc.

Pretty sure he played at Davidson.

I've heard his name mentioned with HailState as well. He was generally a hot name around a couple of openings last year as well.

If BL is saying that much about a coach's job security, the die is cast. Now something could change at the last minute but everything is pointing to the Earley Era being a very short one.

I think it's pretty clear, given the lack of statement from our AD and the very obvious question marks about his job, coupled with KR's statements on Twitter (which our AD is no doubt aware of given that he's considered one of the most plugged in guys in the sport), we're in the process right now of talking to our prospective candidates for the job in order to get that lined up before we move on. There's no way there's any other scenario that's remotely plausible.

Kendall Rogers said this morning he expects A&M to make a change, but expects Trev Alberts to wait to announce it once we have a new coach lined up.

He names Rob Vaughn as the most likely pick and the floor for our hire. He also names Brian O'Conner and says we will make another run at Tony Vitello, but he doesn't expect that to happen.

He starts dicussing A&M at around the 8 minute mark here:

Didn't know where to put this, but KU has signed Fitzgerald to a new 6 year deal. I haven't seen any of the details yet but assume the buyout goes up.

More details on the Fitzgerald deal at KU: Incentive laden with some really interesting triggers

  • $675k starting salary (up from ~$510k); increases annually to a max of $821 in 2031
  • Incentive of an extra months salary (~$56k) for winning the Big 12, Big 12 Tourney, making a regional, advancing to a Super, advancing to the CWS; have not seen the actual contract, unsure if those are cumulative
  • 2 months additional salary for winning a national championship
  • 2 weeks additional salary for winning Conference Coach of the Year
  • A "one-time" one year extension of his contract for winning the Conference or the Conference Tourney
  • A one year extension for making a Super (two or more occurrences in a single year only result in a one year extension, they do not stack)
  • If the one year extensions are triggered the year added will represent a 4% increase in salary from the prior year of the contract
  • Appears to be No Buyout, but rather incentives for staying. Retention bonus of $75k if he's the head coach on Aug 1, 2026. Each year thereafter, a $100,000 bonus on Aug 1 of each subsequent year through 2030. On Jan 1, 2031 he is eligible for an $80k retention bonus, and would be eligible for a $100k retention bonus on Jan 1 of any subsequent year that is the result of the "extension triggers."

I've been watching the CWS games so far(Omaha is the greatest show on dirt even when we aren't there), and watching these teams makes it even harder to comprehend keeping Earley. These teams are so much more disciplined and are way better coached than we are. Very difficult to see Earley ever having us anywhere close to Omaha level.

Where'd you determine that he has "no buyout" if fired?

That certainly hasn't been reported anywhere.

It has been reported he has a buyout if he leaves. And he'd be the first coach in history to sign up for a buyout for leaving, but zero if fired.

Funny enough with how much they've improved in football and baseball the basketball teams are somewhat of a dissapointment in comparison.
