Does anyone remember when Kim Tomes was an Aggie bat girl (don't know if they were called "diamond darlings") back in the 1970s? She was camping when Guadalupe River flooded and was rescued out of a tree by helicopter. A friend and I sat in front seats behind the Aggie bench. That was before she was Miss USA --- maybe a senior at A&M. Recent flooding reminded me of that.

Title error: Diamond, not Diamong

She was pretty cool. I danced with her at the lakeview club even after she was named Miss Texas. She was always laid back & nice to talk to.

She was in my volleyball PE class. I think it irritated my wife that I still remembered her over 40 years later. My wife was in the class too.

My Old Lady, Class of '79, (name not given to protect his honor) decided that since they attended the same high school he had a chance to get a date. He approached her and she declined gracisously as the reigning Miss USA. She was nice about it and used that as her excuse. We all gave him grief for shooting for the stars, but were all amazed he actually asked. None of the rest of us would have even considered it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I believe I remember she was stranded in a tree during some San Antonio flooding and had to be rescued by emergency personnel in the late 1970's after a gulley washer--rainstorm.

Kim dated a friend of mine from Ozona while at A&M. I think even after her reign as Ms. America when she came back to school to finish her degree.

She ended up marrying a guy from Rocksprings.

She had a thing for west/southwest Texas ranchers.

She was very nice.

I knew Kim pretty well since she was a Diamond Darling. I always liked her. But she about got me killed one night at Lakeview. She was dating Garth Ten Napel and decided to flirt with me in order to make him jealous. It turned out about like you would expect. Pretty sure it was Buster Turner & Kyle Hawthorne that saved me - but I can't swear to that.

That's a good story. I can see Hawthorne being your savior. Good guy.

Did you at least get to dance with Ms America?

I didn't know she ever dated jocks!

August 6, 1978 "New York Times" Article -- "Raw Memories of Watery Deaths Haunt Survivors of Floods in Texas"

"Kim Tomes of Houston, Miss U.S.A. of 1977, clinging to a tree for her life after being routed from her bed by the flood at a dude ranch."

Isn't that the truth.

But then married a goat rancher from Rocksprings!

Whom I'm sure is a great guy, as he is probably on TexAgs daily and is therefore following this conversation.
