It looks to me like we have done well with the portal so far. Getting one of the very best bats in America, Havopian, is massive.
A killer starting pitcher would be nice of course…
Looking at the numbers of Hacopian, Duer (Florida Atlantic OF) and lotta (CSF ss) all of them have very high on base percentages and all of them had more walks than Ks.
Do you know how many of our guys had more walks than Ks this year? Zero.
0.0
All three of these transfers also had higher OBP than anyone on our team this year…all of them are right around .500 OBS which is damn good of course. I realize these numbers will come down in the sec.
This strikes me as though we are making a concerted effort to get guys who make contact and walk more often, which I like a lot, even if it's at the expense of HRs and RBIs.
HRs are awesome of course but Ks are just inning killers, and we had waaay too much of that this year.
This is also brings up the question of how we're coaching the swing path. Are we trying to get the optimal launch angle for HRs or going for the flattest swing possible so the bat's in the strike zone longer? That's a whole nother question.
Personally, I'd rather have someone hitting .300, .470 OBP, 6HRs, 35 RBIs, 50 runs scored, than someone hitting .250, .400 OBP,13 HRs, 35 RBIs, and 30 runs scored.
