Howdy, our Grandson, a LHP for Angelo State, sophomore, just got called to play (pitch) for the Bourne Braves in Cape Cod. We are very proud of that. However, we do not know almost anything about it, other than it is a wooden bat league. It always seemed in the past that our best Aggies went there to play summer ball. Looking at the bio's of the pitchers on the team, they are all Wake, Arkansas, Vandy and one TTU boys. That seems like a step up for a Div II pitcher from Angelo, if he does well would this be a tryout for a Div I team, it seems it may be. As stated, know nothing of the Cape Cod league, Anyone, Anyone?

Probably have seen this???

And…

"Bourne won its second consecutive and fourth overall CCBL championship of the modern era by defeating the Orleans Firebirds to win the 2023 finals series. Teams from Bourne/Sagamore have claimed nine championship titles since the league's beginnings, and over 100 players have gone on to play in Major League Baseball."

Those games and towns are a great experience. Highly recommend going up there at some point.

We went and watched a game in Falmouth earlier this month and it was an awesome experience. A lot of Cape Cod guys end up getting drafted. It is very high quality baseball, up close and personal. We stayed in Boston, which is 1.5 hours away. Wish we had spent more time on The Cape.

Definitely go if y'all can!

Sorry I missed your post earleir. Hope your grandson is doing well at the Cape with the Braves. Our grandson played for Bourne in '21. I've tracked Bourne this year and see they just won the CCBL West title. Our grandson has been in the majors with the Athletics for the past month and we're so proud. That being said we still feel our 2 weeks we were at the Cape to watch him play is one of our very best baseball memories. Unbelievable baseball and family oriented atmosphere. Our grandson's host family remains in close touch with him and us to this day.

There are a ton of MLB players that came from D2 nd D3 schools. Our grandson went to a mid major school here in Georgia. Once again here's to the best for your grandson.

We went this summer to watch Bear and Falmouth against Bourne. Outstanding atmosphere. If you go, a great fish shack named Bob Omalley's Whale back restaurant just on the other side of the Sagamore Bridge is worth the visit. It's a dive, but outstanding seafood dishes.

The restaurant has a saying "where getting lucky means going home alone..."

Your story reminds me of my first date with my now wife. I invited her to go with me to a hole in the wall seafood restaurant near the Kemah Boardwalk which no longer exists. She said yes and I was jazzed.

We got to the restaurant and I was taking a moment to choose from the menu then looked up and she was scouring it end to end repeatedly.

I asked if there was something I build go to help and she said she really didn't care for seafood and was looking for steak or chicken. I asked why she said she wanted to go there and she said you don't turn down a first date on that basis.

She wouldn't allow me to take us to another location for that date avd ordered the catfish…then merely picked at it. We will be married 32 years in early October so I guess it wasn't a showstopper!

But I tend to love dives that are special! Even if they serve seafood and my wife doesn't..

Thank you for your post. Our grandson Josh, pitched two innings in the game that they took for the Championship. He had a blast and really enjoyed the comaraderie with the other players and the coaches. He was the only Div 2 player on their roster. He's back at San Angelo State for the fall. Can't say that he wasn't tempted to enter the Portal, but his parents (my oldest daughter) wasn't on board for that. She and his dad haven't missed a game.
Believe it was a summer that he will long remember and perhaps maybe he might make MLB. Again, Thank you for your post.

Going in the portal is a tough call. It's a personal struggle with commitment to your college coaches and teammates that first brought you on board. Primarilly based on his agent's and other former MLB players advice he decided to do it. He went directly to his HC before he announced and told him he was going in the portal. It was a tough call for him. It was a difficult meeting but he survived it and his former HC and he now stay in constant touch. Within a few hours after announcing he was contacted by almost every SEC school (including tu) except the Aggies. Also called by FSU, Clermson, and GA Tech. He chose Florida but Coach Sullivan knew it was contingent on how he did in the draft. He went in the 3rd round even though he was injured before the season's end and had just had surgery for a torn labrum. He didn't throw a ball or swing a bat til 2 months after the draft.

Since your grandson is a pitcher and went to the Cape I believe he'll get drafted. Two of my grandson's college teammates, both pitchers also went to the Cape and were both drafted. Both are currently moving up in the Ranger's organization. Best of luck and Gig Em! I'm also Class of '70.

Was in the Corps in Squadron 5. What I've learned is the majority of Pro and MLB players were not the top of the college or HS draft. It's the ones who commit to the grind with effort and maturity. Got a good feeling your grandson's going places.
