H-town it's your time to show out. Our undefeated (1-0) Aggie Volleyball team travels to Houston for the Rice Invitational this weekend. They will play two games with the first one being against Rice at 6pm tomorrow evening. Our ladies are coming off a huge ranked win against #11 Minnesota at the AVCA First Serve Showcase.
Technically this is Week 1 as the First Serve Showcase is considered week 0. So Rice will be playing its first match of their season against a top ten opponent in us Aggies. Sounds fun for them!
As for us we will be rolling in with all kinds of momentum after our huge season opening win. We won in 4 sets against a talented Minnesota team. We saw excellent play from Logan Lednicky who has 22 kills and 12 digs on an efficient clip. Kyndal Stowers had 14 digs and 9 kills. Emily Hellmuth had 15 kills while our middle duo of Ifenna Cos Okpalla and Morgan Perkins had 9 and 6 kills a piece. Maddie Waak settled in and orchestrated a well balanced attack spreading the ball over. Our littles in the back row showed poised and better control after settling in as well. Freshman Addi Applegate looked strong in the back row. Passing could be better as can serving so those are two key things to focus on.
Rice won't be an easy matchup as they are projected to win the American Conference and had 4 girls selected to the preseason all conference team. They are led by former Aggie volleyball great and team captain, Genny Volpe who's in her 22nd year leading the Owls. She still holds the record fkr most games played for Texas A&M and is 3rd in career digs as an Aggie! She's done an excellent job leading Rice to 8 NCAA tourney selections as well as 413 career wins!
Those 4 all conference selections from Rice were: #8 Middle - Lademi Ogunlala, #23 OH - Taylor Preston, #14 Setter - Savannah Skopal, #24 OH - Cindy Tchouangwa. Ogunlana will be their star and someone they look to carry them from the middle position. She will provide a solid block and an efficient swing from the middle. Their pin Taylor Preston comes from Michigan State. Most of their offense will be through those two and Tchouangwa. They could potentially be a tournament team and they're an easy team to root for due to Volpe.
As for us, it'll be game 2 of our non-conference schedule and a game we should win. I expect Rice to come out swinging and excited for their season and home opener as our girls are coming off a game Monday night in South Dakota. We travelled all the way back Monday night right after the game.
What I want to see from us is better first touches and better passing! Let's stay in system. When we can do that, points will come easily. If they load their block on Lednicky, we have other options, if they load up the middle, we have pins on each side who are lethal. We have so many different ways of scoring and that's what makes our offense so tough to defend. I also wanna see us serve a lot more efficiently. Against Minnesota we served tough and with that comes many errors. The tough serving will be something we'll continue to work through and improve on. If we can serve better, we should have more blocks as well.
Let's hope for the #9 Texas A&M Aggies to continue rolling! I hope there's a lot of maroon in the crowd! Houston Aggies please go support our girls! The games are a blast!
