Your undefeated and top ten Texas A&M Volleyball team will travel up north from Salt Lake City to Logan, Utah to play the latter part of a back to back against Utah State (the other Aggies). After sweeping the number 21 ranked Utah on their home court, the Aggies will face the 1-2 Aggies tonight at 8pm.
Utah State will play their first home match of the season after a 3 game trip in Hawaii, whereas we will be in our 5th straight road game. Utah State travelled to the Aloha State for the Rainbow Wahine Volleyball Classic where they defeated Hawaii in a sweep before losing two 5 set battles with San Diego and Marquette, with all three opponents receiving votes in the top 25.
Utah State was the preseason pick to win the Mountain West conference. They are led by all conference Middle Blocker #2 Tierney Barlow, who is a lethal weapon offensively. She has 41 kills in 13 sets this season, over 3 kills a set from the middle position. Which is second on her team to opposite hitter #5 Loryn Helgesen who has 44 kills. As a team they do have 22 aces to 26 service errors. Ours is 18 to 45. Their caesar distributed evenly. They have a strong setter in #20 Kaylie Kobe who benefitted from two 5 set affairs, has 143 assists in 3 matches, including a 57 assist match. They have been out blocked and out hit on average, so hopefully we can have a strong hitting match and provide a block that shuts them down. With no lethal outside hitter, we should be able to contain their offense. Let's just hope we can handle their serve.
On our side of things we are coming off a match where we saw 3 of our pin hitters shine in Logan Lednicky who had 22 kills, Emily Hellmuth with 12, and Stowers with 11. The beautiful part of the match was how we just kept finding who was hot. Early on Hellmuth was on fire and as she slowed down, we moved to Lednicky. in the 3rd set, we brought in Taylor Humphrey who had back to back kills, and we began to focus on the middles Morgan Perkins and Ifenna Cos-Okaplla. It's been noted that our versatility and depth is our biggest strength. We find who's hot and find weaknesses in the opponents defense.
I'm expecting another huge match for our pins, but I can also see our middles racking up some points! I really want to see another clean match from there service line and I want to see someone else step from there service line and pick up multiple aces in a match like Maddie Waak. Waak has 8 aces on the year, while no one else has more than 2. I also want to see us have a better blocking presence at the net. I think this could be the match we do so.
Hopefully another successful outcome follows and we leave Utah with 2 wins (hopefully 2 sweeps) and head back home undefeated. Next weekend we travel to ranked in state opponents SMU and TCU. That would 3 ranked opponents in 4 matches. Now's the time we get rolling and show the volleyball world why we are a top ten team if not better! BTHO utah state
