As doubts about the viability of a fall college football season intensified during the weekend, players across the country turned to social media to call for a chance to play — and also for a union.

Embraced by the game’s most prominent players, the #WeWantToPlay push took hold and was trending on Twitter with more than 72,000 tweets by late Sunday night.
